The Carolina Panthers didn't have Jonathan Stewart on the practice field Tuesday due to his injured ankle, but the running back will fly to Tampa with the team in the hopes of playing Week 1.

"It's coming along very well," head coach Ron Rivera said. "He moved around an awful lot yesterday, so he was a little bit sore today - a little bit more than we anticipated. He's moving around nicely. We are very encouraged."

The Panthers' depth at running back gives the coaching staff an opportunity to exercise caution with Stewart as he recovers.

"If one guy is nicked, we can lean on the others," Rivera said. "We feel pretty comfortable with that."

Fantasy Impact: 

It sounds as if Mike Tolbert may get extra work even if Jonathan Stewart is able to play. Look for DeAngelo Williams to get most of the carries unless Stewart's ankle heals quickly.

Panthers TE Greg Olsen is hoping he can be as productive as Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham. HC Ron Rivera believes Olsen could be poised for a breakout season not having to share catches with Jeremy Shockey, now a free agent, and with the arrival of new fullback Mike Tolbert, who should lighten Olsen's load as a blocker.

In fact, Rivera believes "it's possible" Olsen could put up numbers similar to what Gronkowski and Graham did last season.

"This will be his first real opportunity with us to step up and be the starting tight end and be the guy," Rivera said. "You watch him catch footballs and you watch him run routes and you see those traits that say you can fit right into that group. We're excited about it."

"I think he's a tremendous target," Rivera said. "I think the chance of him stepping up and being right in the elite group of players at his position I think that's possible. I really do."

"Taking nothing away from Mike Tolbert, who caught more than 50 balls for us, but when he was singled-up because of the way people played Antonio Gates, we didn’t get the big plays out of him we did with Sproles. I know Ronnie Brown is going to make big plays because he has the ability to make the first tackler miss.”

And don’t forget Brown all but invented the wildcat in Miami. Norv won’t be afraid to use it.

“We got some big plays out of the wildcat with LT and Sproles,” he said. “It’s not something we’re going to major in, but if we run it four-five times a game, it isn’t going to take anything away from Philip, and it’s something defenses have to prepare for.”

Fantasy Impact: 

At the very least, it sounds like Brown is entrenched as the backup to Ryan Mathews.

You could make a case that Carolina’s backfield already was overcrowded before Mike Tolbert arrived. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, who each have been 1,000-yard rushers in the past, had to share carries last year in an offense that suddenly turned pass happy with rookie quarterback Cam Newton. Stewart was on the field for 55.2 percent of the offensive plays, while Williams took part in 42.7 percent of the plays. In San Diego, Tolbert took part in 44.4 percent of the Chargers’ offensive plays.

But Tolbert insists there is enough room for all three backs to get plenty of playing time and he throws out some scenarios that Carolina fans might have trouble picturing right now.

“I think we mesh well together,’’ Tolbert said. “They are different types of backs. DeAngelo is more the slicer and Jonathan is more of the power guy and I kind of fit in between. It’s going to be fun for all of us to get in the backfield at the same time or myself with DeAngelo or with Jonathan or just one out of there at times. It’s going to be fun to put it all together and see what happens.’’

Fantasy Impact: 

Stewart is still the Carolina RB to own, especially in PPR formats, but Tolbert's arrival puts a dent in Stewart's value. Throw in some very undefined roles and we have a cloudy RBBC.
