Scouting report

MIA WR Mike Wallace - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Mike Wallace - Week 6 vs. Green Bay

Mike Wallace was limited in practice on Wednesday, although he's been listed on the injury report all season. He hasn't missed a game this year and he should be ready to play Sunday.

He's clearly the best receiving option on the Dolphins as he leads the team in targets, receptions, yards, and touchdowns. He'll be tested this week against the Packers, but he's still a WR2.

MIA WR Mike Wallace - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Mike Wallace - Week 4 vs. Oakland Raiders

Mike Wallace is the only reliable receiver in Miami's offense. He's also the most trusted by quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Through the first three weeks he's had at least five receptions and 50 yards in every game. He also has two touchdowns on the season. He also has 11 more targets than any other teammate this season.

This week he'll face a tough matchup against Oakland. The Raiders have only allowed one touchdown to receivers all season. They also have yet to allow 150 yards to receivers.

Wallace should still be viewed as a WR2 because he's a focal point of this offense, but don't expect huge numbers from him this week. Hope for a touchdown.

MIA WR Mike Wallace - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Mike Wallace - Week 3 vs. Kansas City

Mike Wallace is off to a strong start this season. He's caught a touchdown in each of the first two games and is averaging more yards & receptions per game than last season. He's been the most targeted player on the Dolphins' offense and should continue to put up good numbers.

He'll have a favorable matchup in Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs. K.C. has allowed the seventh most fantasy points to opposing wideouts this season.

Wallace is a focal point of the Dolphins' offense and should continue to see a high volume of targets. In a favorable matchup he should be viewed as a high WR2 with upside.

MIA WR Mike Wallace - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Mike Wallace - Week 2 vs. Buffalo

Mike Wallace had a solid debut in Week 1 against New England. He hauled in seven passes for 81 yards and a touchdown on 11 targets. He only surpassed 81 yards six times last season, and two of those times were for 82 yards.

The encouraging part of Wallace's Week 1 performance is the Dolphins weren't even that successful throwing the ball. Ryan Tannehill only finished with 178 yards on 32 pass attempts. That means 34 percent of Tannehill's throws were in Wallace's direction. If he continues this trend, Wallace should be a great option moving forward.

Sunday should be another good day for Wallace. He faces a Bills defense that allowed four different Bears players to finish with over 70 receiving yards in Week 1. View him as a solid WR2 in a great matchup.

MIA WR Mike Wallace - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Mike Wallace - Week 1 vs. New England
Mike Wallace feasted on the New England secondary in his second matchup against them last season. He caught six balls for 105 yards and a touchdown. He's typically had success against the Patriots' defense in his five year career, but this year is different.

The Patriots added CB Darrelle Revis this offseason and may try and place Wallace on Revis Island in this matchup. Even if Revis doesn't focus solely on Wallace, New England's secondary is a tough matchup.

Wallace should be viewed as a boom-or-bust WR3 option this week.

MIA WR Mike Wallace - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Mike Wallace was targeted a team-high 142 times last season. Although that didn’t lead to the success people hoped it would, it’s still promising for the upcoming season. QB Ryan Tannehill at least wants to get the ball to Wallace and another year of chemistry together could help improve his numbers.

Miami also brought in new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor. Lazor’s system could improve Wallace’s comfort level. The Dolphins are also expected to air the ball out more than last season, which would lead to more opportunities for Wallace.

Fantasy Downside

Last offseason Wallace signed a monster contract and dramatically failed to live up to expectations. Despite being the most targeted receiver, he finished second on the team in receptions and yards (Brian Hartline was the leader in both). He also finished with a career low in yards per catch (12.7) and touchdowns (five).

Wallace’s strength is his speed, but he failed to connect on the deep ball last season. His production relies heavily on whether or not Tannehill takes the next step.

Bottom Line

Wallace has a lot of potential. There’s a reason Miami gave him $27 million in guaranteed money. If he’s able to build chemistry with Tannehill in the new offense he could be a potential late steal.

The offensive line must also improve for Wallace to have success. The line woes caused a lot of problems for Miami last season. Speed still kills in the NFL and Wallace has a lot of it. He’s a WR3 with potential.
