Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best is healed from turf toe in both feet. After about an eight-week break at the end of last season, he began working out lightly in February, then going hard in March.

"Unless it's the same thing, the same kind of hits happen again, you can't be cured from it," Best said of turf toe, which is the spraining of toe ligaments. "I can't get it again. I'm just praying that it won't happen again. But as far as lingering from last year, there's no way."

Fantasy Impact: 

The Lions are building the type of offense that fantasy owners can trust, and Best will be a big part of that. Although the Lions drafted Mikel Leshoure, Best will see lots of work and has the potential to be a top twenty fantasy back.

Coach Jim Schwartz made it clear that Jahvid Best still was the primary weapon in the Lions' run game. He's still the game-breaker, presuming the turf toe issues are behind him and he stays healthy. But the Lions have a new and exciting toy in Mikel Leshoure. Where Best darts and dances, Leshoure plows. He's thick-bodied and hits the hole hard without any hesitation or fear of fumbling. He's what the Lions have lacked, a pile-moving, short-yardage runner, who can also do some damage in the open field and can catch the football. The guess here is once Leshoure gets comfortable, he might get 40 to 45 percent of the reps.

A second-round pick out of Illinois, Mikel Leshoure joined teammates and free-agent cornerback Dre Bly for Day 1 of the second set of player-organized workouts Monday at Birmingham Detroit Country Day.

He sat out some of the practice with a cramp and kept his bruising running style under wraps in a no-contact workout, but he still caught the eye of cohorts.

"He's a big kid," quarterback Matthew Stafford said. "He's what I expected to see, which is good."

Said receiver Derrick Williams: "He looks like he's a beast. He has that look. And when he was in college he was definitely someone to be afraid of. I wasn't on defense, but some of my guys (at Penn State) were like it was hard to tackle that guy."

Matthew Stafford's Lions worked out at Detroit Country Day School on Monday, the same place they gathered a few times last month. About 25 Lions were on hand, including two second-round picks from the team's 2011 draft. Wide receiver Titus Young and running back Mikel Leshoure both were about as wide-eyed as expected.

"I don't think they overwhelmed us with too much," Leshoure said. "There's no playbooks for me to just go home and study. We're going to take it bit by bit." "To tell you the truth, it was a little bit more organized than I expected. I figured it would just be run by the players. For guys to be here to help us out, that's a blessing."
