Scouting report

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 – Mychal Rivera vs. Arizona Cardinals
Mychal Rivera pitched a shutout in Sunday’s loss to San Diego, failing to catch a pass as Oakland’s wide receivers stole the show. Although we could be generous and say Rivera is having a sophomore slump, that would be stretching the truth since he was not good enough as a freshman to have a slump. Make sure you banish Mychal from your mind.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 – Mychal Rivera vs. San Diego Chargers
Mychal Rivera’s numbers, which were never strong to begin with, keep getting worse. In his last two games, Rivera has four receptions for 21 yards. On a better NFL team, Rivera is a backup. In fantasy, he should not be occupying a roster spot.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 – Mychal Rivera vs. Miami Dolphins
Heading into week three, Mychal Rivera was not setting the world on fire with eight receptions for 62 yards. Rivera then ended up regressing further, catching two passes for 11 yards against New England’s strong pass defense. Although the Dolphins have given up touchdown passes to Kansas City’s Travis Kelce and New England’s Rob Gronkowski, Rivera has never made much of an impact and we do not expect he will reverse that trend on Sunday.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Mychal Rivera at New England Patriots
Mychal Rivera, like the rest of the Raiders, had a bad day at the office last Sunday. The Raiders were soundly defeated by the Houston Texans and Rivera lost a fumble. His final numbers (five catches for 31) were in line with what he often produces. Mychal has never made it past low-end TE2 territory in his career and is not going to start on Sunday in a brutal matchup with New England.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Mychal Rivera vs. Houston Texans
Although Mychal Rivera saw the most playing time among Oakland’s tight ends in week one, he was not able to generate much production, with three catches for 31 yards in a 19-14 loss to the New York Jets. Given Rivera’s unremarkable track record and the fact young Oakland quarterback Derek Carr will be facing a Houston defense coming off a strong performance against Washington, there are tons of better choices out there.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Mychal Rivera at New York Jets
On December 8, 2013, in a 37-27 loss to the Jets, Mychal Rivera hauled in five passes for 21 yards and a touchdown, one of four he scored last year. Rivera was Oakland’s primary tight end in 2013 because of the absence of David Ausberry, who had been put on injured reserve. Ausberry is healthy heading into the season, reducing Rivera’s targets, which were not going to be high to begin with due to a deep group of wide receivers and Oakland’s efforts to establish a running game that will take pressure off young quarterback Derek Carr. Rivera spent most of last season on the waiver wire and could have another long run this year.

OAK TE Rivera Mychal - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Picked in the sixth round of the 2013 draft, Mychal Rivera exceeded expectations as a rookie, since the Raiders originally were not counting on him for a big role. But when David Ausberry was lost for the season, Oakland turned to Rivera. He caught 38 passes for 407 yards and four touchdowns. As the saying goes, not bad for a beginner. Will Rivera ride his rookie wave of success up the fantasy rankings in his second NFL tour of duty?

Fantasy Upside
Ausberry has the athletic edge on Rivera, but can’t seem to stay healthy, as he has just recently had a knee procedure. Around the same time as Ausberry’s procedure, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Olson tabbed Rivera as one of the most improved players in camp. Rivera’s growth and durability is a plus, as well as the fact that new Oakland starting quarterback Matt Schaub has a history of throwing to tight ends. The sad sack Raiders are going to be facing a lot of deficits, which will lead to more passing.

Fantasy Downside
With the Raiders employing three different quarterbacks and Rivera going through typical rookie growing pains, he did not end up on many fantasy rosters. Unfortunately for Mychal, Oakland is expected to have more chaos behind center as Schaub and rookie Derek Carr could both make starts. The Raiders don’t use their tight ends as outlet receivers as much as other teams, as running backs Darren McFadden, Marcel Reece, and Maurice Jones-Drew are capable targets out of the backfield. At wide receiver, Oakland is high on holdovers Andre Holmes and Rod Streater and also signed James Jones, further indication Rivera and Ausberry probably won’t develop into featured threats.

Bottom Line
Rivera’s numbers have the potential to be better with additional experience, but there are too many negative factors that will keep them from rising dramatically. He will remain a fixture in the free agent pool.
