Veteran Nick Novak is a strong candidate to replace injured Nate Kaeding as the kicker in San Diego.

The Chargers are very familiar with Novak, a college standout at Maryland who has had stints in the NFL with Washington, Dallas and elsewhere. He had a previous stint in San Diego and the Chargers tried to sign him last year out of the UFL, where he was special teams player of the year, but stipulations in the UFL contract structure scuttled the deal.

Novak is coming off a strong preseason, where he pushed Nick Folk for the job with the Jets and he is already living and training in San Diego, where he was born.

The Chargers' impressive comeback victory against the Minnesota Vikings on opening day may have come at a very steep price for San Diego.

NFL.com blogger Jason La Canfora is reporting that San Diego Chargers place kicker Nate Kaeding may very well be lost for the season, after what was a hard-fought win against visiting Minnesota.

According to La Canfora, Kaeding suffered a torn ACL while attempting to make a play on a Percy Harvin's 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Kaeding will have an MRI on Monday morning, but the preliminary signs have not been encouraging.

San Diego Chargers wide receiver Legedu Naanee (hamstring), safety Steve Gregory (shoulder) and running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) are listed as doubtful for Monday night's home game versus the Denver Broncos. No doubtful player has suited up for the Chargers this season. The surprise in the group is Naanee, who had appeared on track for a return. This is the second time in his six weeks out that he has had a setback.

Defensive end Travis Johnson (shoulder) was limited in Saturday's practice as he was every day this week, and tight end Kris Wilson (back) did not participate for the second straight day. Both are listed as questionable.

Placekicker Nate Kaeding (groin) and linebacker Brandon Siler (foot) practiced full all week and are listed as probable.
