Scouting report

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Nick Mullens was pretty good against the woeful Giants last week, stepping in for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo and throwing for 343 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers. Mullens has been surprisingly prolific as a starter, with 2,691 yards and 14 touchdowns in just 10 games of action over the course of his career.

This week, Mullens faces an Eagles defense that ranks 23rd in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks and he may have his top target in tight end George Kittle back on the field. It’s risky to roll with Mullens given the attrition on the team, but he has some sneaky QB2 upside in a pretty good matchup.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at New York Giants

Nick Mullens filled in for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo last week and threw for 71 yards and a pick against the Jets. He also completed eight of his 11 pass attempts, so it wasn’t all bad. The 49ers got up early on the Jets and then held them off for much of the game. They’re going to need more out of Mullens moving forward if they’re going to keep pace with the rest of the NFC West, should Garoppolo miss time.

Even if Garoppolo is out this week, Mullens may wind up in a conservative game script once again, as the Giants have looked terrible through two games and are now without Saquon Barkley for the rest of the season. This could be an ugly game with so many injuries on both sides, and fantasy owners should stay away from the quarterback situation for both teams if possible.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Los Angeles Rams

Nick Mullens had 241 yards and an interception in a tight game against the Bears last week. Mullens has shown flashes of ability throughout the season, but overall, he’s yet to show he can put up any kind of consistent fantasy numbers in the 49ers’ offense. While Mullens is an interesting dynasty add in deep leagues in case he gets moved to another team in the offseason, he has very little value in redraft leagues. There should be better options available for streamers.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Chicago Bears

Nick Mullens showed a little moxie in a win over the Seahawks last week, completing 69 percent of his passes for 275 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. Mullens should be considered a super risky fantasy option and belongs on waivers in most leagues – especially this week against a relentless Chicago Bears defense – but if he plays half-decently to close out the season, dynasty owners may want to stash him in case he draws some trade interest from a quarterback-needy team.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Nick Mullens put up 332 yards and two touchdowns in a win over the Broncos last week. He’s been mostly inconsistent this season, but he has shown a propensity to sling it from time to time and has built up a nice rapport with tight end George Kittle and rookie speedster Dante Pettis. While Mullens may have some streaming value in deep, two-quarterback leagues in the right matchups, a tough game against the Seahawks this week is probably not a good time to use him. He should remain on waivers this week.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Denver Broncos

Nick Mullens put up pretty big numbers last week, throwing for 414 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a blowout loss. Mullens also threw a pick, and while he’s shown some potential at times during his stint as a fill-in starter, he’s thrown four touchdowns to five interceptions since his breakout debut against the Raiders four games ago. This week, Mullens will face a tough Broncos pass rush. Mullens is a risky bet in any week, but he’s especially hard to trust in a bad matchup. He should be on waivers in most leagues.

SF QB Nick Mullens - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Seattle Seahawks

Nick Mullens was very disappointing against an easy opponent last week, putting up only 221 yards, a touchdown and two picks against the Buccaneers. Mullens has looked less and less like a starting-caliber quarterback since he burst onto the scene against Oakland, making it hard to trust him in most league formats. Against a tough Seahawks defense this week, there’s no reason to have him in your lineup.
