TB TE O.J. Howard - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

O.J. Howard as emerged as the clear star between the Bucs' two talented tight ends. He finished with over 50 yards in Week 1, and put up a solid 3-96-1 stat line in Week 2. However, most of his production was highlighted by a 75-yard touchdown.

He should be viewed as a low-end TE1 option against the Steelers, who gave up a big game to Travis Kelce a week ago.

TB TE O.J. Howard - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

O.J. Howard saw two targets and converted them both into receptions for 54 yards in Week 1. His fellow tight end Cameron Brate didn't have any targets. We like both Howard and Brate as individual players, but we ranked them low heading into 2018 because we expected them to cancel each other out.

In Week 1, Howard was more useful both in the box score and in snaps, being on the field for 19 more offensive plays. It's a small sample size, though, and two targets isn't great for Howard. We view him as a poor TE option in Week 2 against the Eagles.

TB TE O.J. Howard - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

O.J. Howard was efficient as a rookie, hauling in 26 of his 39 targets. He finished tied for the team-high in receiving touchdowns (6), which helped him place No. 20 among tight ends in PPR formats. He’s a big, athletic tight end capable of putting up TE1 numbers with enough opportunities.

Fantasy Downside

In most offenses, Howard would be a TE1 prospect in fantasy this season. But with the Bucs, he has to split time with fellow talented tight end Cameron Brate. The two of them together is great for the Bucs, but bad for fantasy owners who want to start one of them on a weekly basis.

2018 Bottom Line

Much like last season, there will be games where Howard puts up big numbers and you wished you started him. But then he’ll follow it up with a dud and you’ll continue to be frustrated as he won’t put up reliable production. If Brate ever gets hurt, then Howard immediately becomes an attractive option. Otherwise, we expect the two of them to cancel each other.

TB TE O.J. Howard - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Atlanta Falcons

O.J. Howard was the Bucs' best fantasy performer last week, finishing with 4 receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown on 6 targets. Howard has had some solid games in his rookie season, going over 50 yards five times while scoring all 5 of his touchdowns in those games. But his performances are seemingly random and hard to predict.

He gets a fairly tough matchup this week against Atlanta, although he finished with 52 yards in his previous game against the Falcons. He's a risky start and should only be viewed as a TE2.

TB TE O.J. Howard - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. New York Jets

O.J. Howard has made some big plays this season, but at the end of the day, he has just 14 receptions through eight games. He could see an increase this week with Mike Evans out, but he's such a hard player to trust in fantasy. He's nothing more than a shot-in-the-dark play.

TB TE O.J. Howard - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at New Orleans Saints

O.J. Howard's big Week 7 caught some eyes in the fantasy world, but he was quickly ignored with his low Week 8 numbers. The rookie had just 2 catches (on 2 targets) for 16 yards. Howard is a talented rookie and will continue to make big plays in random spots, but unless something happens to Cameron Brate, he's not worth looking at as a trustworthy option on a regular basis.

TB TE O.J. Howard - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Carolina Panthers

O.J. Howard led the Bucs in receiving yards last week with 98, and he even found the end zone twice on 6 catches. Every stat was a season-high for the rookie, who looks to get more involved in the offense.

Still, this game was an anomaly. Cameron Brate is the more trustworthy TE option for the Bucs in fantasy. Howard may have his moments, but they will be hard to predict ahead of time. Let's wait until he starts to consistently produce before we trust him as an option in fantasy.
