Week 8 vs Cleveland Browns
Phillip Dorsett returned from a one-game absence to a New England receiving corps missing Josh Gordon, which resulted in an 88% snap share for Dorsett, his second-highest of the season. His target rate of 5.6% was a distant third behind Julian Edelman and Jakobi Meyers, but a deep touchdown supplemented his 46 receiving yards on three receptions to make him Week 8's WR21. Dorsett's Receiver Air Conversion Ration (RACR) in his tenure with the Patriots has been excellent and well above league-average efficiency at every target depth up to 35 yards, but his target volume remains low.
Part of the reason that Tom Brady isn't peppering Dorsett with targets is that the Patriots' offensive line isn't the usual starting five, and includes a backup left tackle, a second-string center, and an underperforming right guard and right tackle. They've been far from bad, but also not the elite pass-protecting unit of years past, and Dorsett's 12.9-yard aDOT means his routes take longer to develop. Last week, 22 of Brady's 31 attempts were thrown within 2.5 seconds. Until left tackle Isaiah Wynn presumably returns from IR, Dorsett remains a high-variance touchdown-dependent start as a WR4 FLEX play, which is the case in Week 8.
