Arians: Rashard Mendenhall is "a legitimate big-time threat"

Cardinals HC Bruce Arians signed RB Rashard Mendenhall to a one-year contract in free agency and is thrilled to have him.

“He’s a legitimate big-time threat every time he touches the ball,” Arians, the Steelers former offensive coordinator, said this morning at the NFC coaches breakfast at the Arizona Biltmore Resort. “He’s a big back who never has to come out of the game. He has a 230-pound body with 180-pound feet.”

Fantasy Impact: 

It certainly sounds as if Arians plans to start Mendenhall over Ryan Williams, but we'll know more once we get deeper into summer.

“As a running back he’s the total package,” Arians said in a release by the team. “He’s a big, strong, every-down back with speed who can pass block and also catch the ball. I’ve said before: he’s a big man with little-people feet, meaning he can run like he’s 180 (pounds) but also pound the ball like he’s 230.”

Fantasy Impact: 

The Cardinals gave Mendenhall a one-year contract, which doesn't indicate a ton of confidence. If Ryan Williams is healthy, this could be an interesting camp battle this summer.

Cardinals sign Rashard Mendenhall to one-year deal

The Arizona Cardinals reached an agreement in principle on a one-year deal with former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Bruce Arians, the Cardinals' coach, was at one time Mendenhall's offensive coordinator with the Steelers.

Mendenhall was slowed last season by injuries. He tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 17 of the 2011 season and didn't return until Oct. 4 of last season. His return didn't last long, though, as he strained his right Achilles four days later.

The 25-year-old running back has rushed for 3,549 yards and 29 touchdowns in 57 career games.

Fantasy Impact: 

It's interesting that the deal is only for one year, but the Cardinals (and other teams) may not feel that Mendenhall is completely healthy and want to limit their risk. The deal allows him to prove himself and potentially cash in next summer. He will vie with Ryan Williams for touches in the Arizona backfield. Until the depth chart shakes out, we won't know who is the better fantasy bet for 2013.

Teams don't want to spend much for running backs these days, and Rashard Mendenhall's lost season could lead to him re-signing with the Steelers on a discount.
