Marques Colston not practicing, but would play if it mattered

For the fifth practice over the last six days, the New Orleans Saints gave wide receiver Marques Colston the day off from practice Wednesday but the veteran said he would be ready to go if the upcoming game were the regular season.

"If this were September and we were getting ready for week one, I'd be out here practicing," Colston said.

Fantasy Impact: 

The fact that Colston is not practicing is worrisome, as is the swelling in his knee. But he also says he feels good enough to practice for and play in a regular season game. But how will his knee respond then? The situation is muddy (to say the least), but Lance Moore and Robert Meachem are looking better and better, while Devery Henderson is on the verge of relevancy.

Saints WR Marques Colston has not practiced in five days.

Fantasy Impact: 

Colston is coming off of microfracture surgery, so his absence from practice is worrisome. The Saints may be just playing it safe with their star WR, but fantasy owners should be careful not to overspend for someone with Colston's injury history on draft day. Lance Moore and Robert Meachem are looking like serious sleepers in the later rounds.

Lance Moore has apparently agreed to a five-year deal with the Saints. He tweeted, "Welp, its been real new orleans........But let's make the next five years even more real. I'm coming back baby!!!"

Fantasy Impact: 

Moore is a nice sleeper in 2011, especially in PPR formats. He has been going in the 10th round this summer and is a good pick as early as the 9th. Assuming Reggie Bush is released, there will be plenty of extra targets for Moore, Marques Colston, Jimmy Graham, Robert Meachem and Pierre Thomas.

Saints trainer Wyatt Harris said receivers Robert Meachem and Marques Colston are fully recovered from their offseason surgeries. Colston had a microfracture surgery to repair cartilage around his right kneecap following the 2010 season. And Meachem had surgery to repair a lingering left ankle injury.

Harris raved about Meachem's progress, labeling him "150 percent" recovered after finally shedding the nagging injury.

"Meachem is better than he was any year he's ever been there with the Saints," Harris said. "More explosive, faster, sudden speed. I am very excited about what y'all are about to see with Robert Meachem."

Harris boasted that Meachem could probably run the 40-yard dash in 4.25 seconds right now and said he has focused this offseason an expanding his "route tree."

Fantasy Impact: 

After a nice sophomore season (45-722-9), Meachem took a step back in his third year (44-638-5) at least partly due to his ankle injury. With Colston coming off another knee surgery, the opportunity may be there for Meachem to step into a WR1/WR2 role in one of the best offenses in the league.
