Last night's split in Chargers backfield: Ronnie Brown 25 offensive snaps, Ryan Mathews 20, Danny Woodhead 10.

Fantasy Impact: 

There wasn't a lot expected out of the Chargers backfield this season in terms of fantasy production, but I think we all thought Mathews would be the guy to somewhat emerge. Brown mostly played on third down, and it's a bit of a surprise Woodhead wasn't more involved. It's only one week, but you get the sense it could be a situation to stay away from.

The Chargers' faith in RB Ryan Mathews appears unshaken [after a preseason fumble].

Aside from the fumble, for which Mathews and coach Mike McCoy agreed Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell deserves some credit, the 25-year-old has shown good vision behind a more physical offensive line. He has 26 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown in three games.

Fantasy Impact: 

The preseason fumble was his first. Mathews has lost seven of 12 career fumbles on 675 regular-season touches, according to the story. It doesn’t appear it will put Mathews in the doghouse. But even so, Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown figure to cut into Mathews’ workload this year. Mathews is clearly the most talented of the backs and would have low-end RB2 potential. Right now he ranks as a RB3 for draft purposes.

Noticeably to teammates, Chargers RB Ryan Mathews has been carrying an added confidence of late.

He's rushed 12 times for 64 yards through two exhibitions. While feeling faster physically, he said the game is slowing down mentally and that he's learned to trust his instincts more entering his fourth season.

Fantasy Impact: 

Mathews gives credit to the offensive line, but it's still not expected to be a strong point of the team. While Mathews is clearly the most talented back, he'll still compete with Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown, leaving Mathews ranked at 27th among our RBs - a clear RB3 right now.

Danario Alexander tears ACL

The San Diego Chargers have lost wide receiver Danario Alexander potentially for the season with a torn right ACL, a source said.

Alexander, who tore his left ACL three times in college at Missouri, has had a history of knee problem.

Fantasy Impact: 

Alexander emerged as a very good fantasy player last season, catching 37 passes for 658 yards and seven touchdowns in 10 games overall. Over that span he posted #6 WR numbers, and this year we had him ranked as a solid WR3. Vincent Brown and Malcom Floyd will both get a bump in value, but even Brown just recently returned to practice. Also, the Bolts are supposed to simplify things this year, running more with Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown, and getting the ball quicker out of QB Philip Rivers' hand. We have Keenan Allen next up on the depth chart followed by Eddie Royal and Robert Meachem, who were both very disappointing last season. At TE, Antonio Gates figures to see a few more targets as well. This is a big blow to Philip Rivers.
