Also, OC Kyle Shanahan said the starting nod being given Thursday to tailback Evan Royster is not necessarily an indication of which way the team is leaning in the competition for the starting running back job.

“Nothing is set,” Shanahan said.

Coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday that Royster would start against the Bills and split carries with Roy Helu. Tim Hightower, who’s working his way back from a knee injury suffered last season, is not scheduled to play in Buffalo.

“Hopefully one of those guys will make our decision easy,” Kyle Shanahan said.

Redskins believe Royster has “higher ceiling” then Helu

ESPN's Dan Graziano on the Redskins' RB situation:

Evan Royster looked like the best back in camp when I was there last week, and the conversations I had with Redskins people while there led me to believe they think Royster has a higher ceiling than fellow second-year back Roy Helu does assuming both players are fully healthy. I know they also like rookie Alfred Morris, and that he's not out of this mix, and the chief concern they have with both Royster and Helu is health.

So the fact Royster gets the first start doesn't automatically mean he's the favorite to open the regular season as the starter. For one thing, Hightower's recovery is proceeding, and if he can get healthy he's the starting running back. Also, since the chief worry about both Helu and Royster is health, we have to see not only how they look in the preseason but also how they hold up.

Fantasy Impact: 

It wouldn't be at all surprising if this situation devolved into a three-headed mess of a RBBC.

Evan Royster continues to work with the first team

Redskins RB Evan Royster has worked with the starting unit as Tim Hightower remains limited in full-team work.

"He was just kind of a guy, and when he did get his opportunity he showed good signs, and then he'd fall out of nowhere and show flashes," guard Kory Lichtensteiger said. "Toward the end of the year he was just a good player.

"He has a little wiggle to him, maybe the best wiggle of anybody in our running back group. That helps him make people miss and get a little space."

Fantasy Impact: 

The most alarming thing to note here is that the team doesn't appear to believe that Roy Helu can carry the load. Royster may hold nice value as a late-round flier in fantasy drafts, though Helu will surely get work on third downs.

Redskins RB Evan Royster is the first RB up for 11-on-11 drills. Tim Hightower is seven months removed from ACL surgery.

Fantasy Impact: 

Again, a potential messy situation in Washington with the RBs. The team really doesn't seem to view Roy Helu as a feature back, so with Tim Hightower not fully recovered, perhaps Royster is a sleeper for more work this year. Stay tuned...
