SD RB Ryan Mathews - Week 12, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 - Mathews vs. St. Louis

Ryan Mathews was back in action last week against the Raiders. It was his first game since getting injured Week 2 against Seattle. Mathews ended up with 16 carries, probably on the higher end of what was expected. He finished with 70 yards and added a catch for five yards.

This week, it's a tough matchup against the Rams who are fifth in allowing fantasy points to RBs. It's all part of a pretty tough stretch for the Bolts and the running game. Mathews edged Branden Oliver in carries last week and that's likely to continue from this point out. However, the matchups will likely cap Mathews' fantasy potential.

We also had a news item that Mathews was seen limping after the game so owners may want to monitor this leading up to Sunday.

SD RB Ryan Mathews - Week 11, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 - Mathews vs. Oakland
Ryan Mathews returns to the lineup this week, just in time for a great matchup against the Raiders. Oakland is 31st in allowing fantasy points to RBs because teams are able to get leads and kill the clock running the ball. With it being Mathews' first week back, it isn't fair to expect a heavy workload so Mathews is ranked just 20th on our list. Look for him to give some carries away to Branden Oliver and/or Donald Brown. Mathews is worth picking up but has some tough matchups the rest of the way.

SD RB Ryan Mathews - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Seattle
Ryan Mathews had a tough matchup last week against the Cards defense, which ranked first in not allowing points to RBs. Mathews ran just 12 times for 40 yards but helped owners with a rushing TD. He added two catches for 20 yards.

This week things don't get much easier as the Bolts face the Seahawks who are sixth in allowing points to RBs. Mathews comes in as a low-end RB3 as a result. While the 12 carries is a little discouraging, the team does want to limit his work to save him for later in the season. Danny Woodhead had six carries to Donald Brown's two so Mathews is still the go-to guy.

The good news for owners is his matchups get a little easier from Week 3 through pretty much Week 12. He does face the Jets in Week 5 but out side of that things are pretty friendly. Stay patient with Mathews and try and get through this stretch.

SD RB Ryan Mathews - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Arizona
After starting 2013 getting about 13-19 carries a game, Ryan Mathews carried the load over the final four weeks with 20-plus carries. Unfortunately, he was banged up heading into the playoffs. Because of that, the team brought in Donald Brown to ease up on Mathews workload and it looks like we might expect most weeks to fall in the 13-19 category for Mathews.

Unfortunately for Mathews owners, it's a tough Week 1 matchup going against a Cardinals defense that was tops in the league in allowing fantasy points to RBs. As a result, Mathews falls all the way to 25th on our RB rankings which puts him in the RB3 or flex spot in typical league's lineups. With this game on the road, and next week's game at home vs. Seattle, owners may want to prepare for a slow start.

SD RB Ryan Mathews - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Ryan Mathews led the NFL in carries over the final five games of the regular season. Even with the recent acquisition of Donald Brown -- a favorite of GM Tom Telesco -- the Bolts have no plans to lighten Mathews' load in 2014. "We know Ryan is our bell cow," Telesco said. As the San Diego Union-Tribune noted, "Ball control was part of the Chargers' identity in 2013. Moving forward, the Chargers want to add more speed on offense. Their focus is not sustaining long drives. They want touchdowns, however they come, and it's expected they'll continue to work to find more explosiveness in the passing game over the coming weeks and months. ..." That said, free agency thus far has strengthened last year's recipe. San Diego has made two key signings on offense. Brown is one. David Johnson, a former Steelers blocking TE and FB, is the other. The entire starting offensive line from 2013 remains on the roster. So even with Brown's arrival, Mathews is in good position to build on his impressive 2013 season. Draft accordingly.

Fantasy Downside
Mathews has had injury issues in the past (one could argue a pair of broken collarbones were freakish) and ball security has been an issue.

Bottom Line
Despite the arrival of Brown, the presence of Danny Woodhead and the departure of former coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, there's not much evidence suggesting a major change of roles going forward. Given that, Mathews is looking like a pretty solid value play at this point.
