Scouting report

by Bill Riccette

MIN QB Sam Darnold - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Los Angeles Rams

Overall, it wasn't a terrible day for Sam Darnold in Week 7, going 22-of-27 for 259 yards as the Vikings. He did also make it five games out of six with an interception and two straight games with one or fewer touchdowns. His hot start has cooled off a bit. He gets the Rams this week who rank in the middle of the league against the pass. Having a healthy Aaron Jones back will also help take pressure off of Darnold, who looks like a solid streaming option this week but not necessarily a must-start in a week where all 32 teams are in action.

MIN QB Sam Darnold - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Detroit Lions

Sam Darnold is coming off his worst performance of the season in Week 5 against the Jets, going just 14-of-31 for 179 yards and throwing his fourth interception of the season. That said, the Jets have one of the best defenses in the league. He faces another one this week in Detroit, but also one that is allowing almost 330 passing yards per game and just lost their star in Aidan Hutchinson. The Vikings are fairly healthy all around thanks to the bye week and Darnold has shown he can do well in this offense, putting him as a borderline QB1 this week.

MIN QB Sam Darnold - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. New York Jets (in London)

It's the Sam Darnold Bowl in London Sunday as the Vikings quarterback faces the team that drafted him in 2018. Darnold is out to prove he wasn't the reason his time in New York didn't fare well. Darnold became the first QB in the Super Bowl era to win and have at least two passing touchdowns in each of his first four starts for a team. The Jets remain one of the better defenses in the league. Darnold is a QB2 this week.

MIN QB Sam Darnold - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Green Bay Packers

Sam Darnold's career resurgence continues. He has multiple touchdowns in all three games so far, including four last week against the Texans. Kevin O'Connell and Darnold are so far a match made in heaven. They hope to continue that match this week against the Packers, who rank 22nd in passing yards allowed per game but 10th in EPA per pass allowed. Darnold continues creeping up towards being a fantasy starter.

MIN QB Sam Darnold - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Houston Texans

The resurrection of Sam Darnold continues. Another solid day in Week 2 with 268 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Minnesota’s big win to get to 2-0. Darnold better be ready for a heavy dose of pressure this week. The Texans are coming off a seven-sack performance last week against the Bears. Darnold isn’t a QB1 yet in fantasy, but he’s getting close.

MIN QB Sam Darnold - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Is Sam Darnold beginning to resurrect his career? He didn't have a bad first start in Minnesota -- 19/24, 208 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and started 12/12. He also had a career-high in completion percentage over expected at +12.7%, per NFL Next Gen Stats. Darnold looks to be a nice fit in Kevin O'Connell's offense. This week, he faces the 49ers, who held Jets QB Aaron Rodgers to just 167 yards in Week 1. Darnold's arrow is pointing up, but he still remains a low-end QB2 for now.

SF QB Sam Darnold - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

With Brock Purdy in concussion protocol, Sam Darnold is set to make his first start for the 49ers. Darnold had some moderate success in Carolina and New York, but was never consistent enough to stick. He has the best supporting cast he’s ever had now, however, so the 49ers are hoping he can get the offense back on track after a couple of disappointing losses.

This week, Darnold has a nice matchup against a Cincinnati defense that ranks 22nd in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Darnold should find success in what could be a shootout. Darnold is no stranger to fantasy success in the past, and with the weapons he has at his disposal, we have him ranked as a low-end QB1 option in fantasy leagues.

Update: Looks like Brock Purdy is ready to go, so make sure Darnold is no longer in your lineup.
