NYJ QB Sam Darnold - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Detroit Lions

Rookie Sam Darnold won the starting job in training camp with some impressive play in preseason games. That was preseason. He will now start his first NFL game and it will be on the road.

Darnold could end up being special for New York, but how long will it take? And if he struggles early, the Jets might opt to go to veteran Josh McCown. Darnold wil face a Lions defense that has struggled against the pass so the positive matchup should help him. But not enough to consider starting Darnold on your fantasy team. At this point, he probably should be on the waiver wire.

NYJ QB Sam Darnold - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Sam Darnold is the Jets' future at quarterback. The team likes his talent and starting Week 1 is not out of the question. Darnold has everything—arm strength, size, accuracy and pocket mobility. At USC, he passed for 7,229 yards, 57 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in two years as a starter.

Fantasy Downside

Most likely, Josh McCown will be the starter Week 1. He had a good season in 2017, which means the Jets don't have to force Darnold into the starting role. They can wait until they feel he is ready.

2018 Bottom Line

Darnold might have some value in 2018, but where his real value lies is in keeper leagues. He is our highest-ranked rookie quarterback going into the season, but until we know he has the job, he will take up a roster spot. Your guess of when he starts will determine if you take him or not in 2018. A late-round flier selection on him might work out for you.
