Cleveland QB Seneca Wallace Will Work With First Team

So, what does the Browns offense do for an encore tonight against the Rams after its thrilling debut in Green Bay last week? It better be good, because the status quo isn't going to cut it for coach Eric Mangini.

"I'm looking for us to play and operate better than we did against Green Bay," said Mangini. "That's what I typically look for each step in the preseason. I want to continue to do well and improve on the things we didn't do well. There was plenty to improve on from the game and a lot of things I was happy with."

Mangini will play his starters for the first half and maybe into the third quarter, depending on the quality of the reps Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace get. The coach said he anticipates Wallace working with the first team again and has liked what he has seen.

Wallace threw two touchdown passes on his three drives against Green Bay, one to Brian Robiskie in the back left corner of the end zone while scrambling left and a 20-yarder to Ben Watson over the middle after faking an out.

"It was nice to see Seneca roll out of the pocket, break contain and throw a touchdown on somebody besides us," said Mangini. "Because he extends the play, it's been really good work defensively. I've been pleased with him. He's an accurate guy. He's got a strong arm, he's confident, he's got poise. The confidence in him has grown each week as we've gotten to know him and he's gotten to know the system."

Fantasy Impact: 

Many feel it's only a matter of time before Wallace is Cleveland's starter over Jake Delhomme, but neither will be major fantasy factors.

Browns coach Eric Mangini said last month that he wasn't ready to declare Jake Delhomme his starting quarterback. But Delhomme will definitely go into camp with a leg up on Seneca Wallace.

Mangini told our own Mike Florio on The Dan Patrick Show that everything Delhomme did during the Browns' organized team activities indicated that he's ready to be the Browns' starting quarterback.

"It's really Jake's job to lose, and he did a great job during OTAs," Mangini said. "I couldn't have been happier with him, not just in terms of the way he learned the information but the way he ran the offense."

Fantasy Impact: 

Delhomme isn't going to be a highly-targeted fantasy QB this August. You already know six of his games will be against Pittsburgh, Cincy and Baltimore, making him most likely an unsafe start. He'll also see the Jets and New England. He looks to be a QB that won't see a lot of good fantasy matchups this year, based on 4for4's strength of schedule for passing.

When the Browns first put together their wildcats formation -- as in two wildcats, Josh Cribbs and Seneca Wallace -- they wondered how the two would blend. They have been thrilled as Wallace and Cribbs realize this is a way for both to be on the field -- instead of as a competition. In many of his passing plays, Wallace's first target has been Cribbs. They do have some plays for Cribbs to throw the ball, but we'll see how often that happens. The Browns want to find ways to put the ball in Cribbs' hands and let him run.

Compared to the relative ease that Delhomme has adjusted to the offense, Wallace has had some struggles. He played in Mike Holmgren's West Coast offense his entire career in Seattle. While the Browns have some West Coast elements, it still is more like what New England does -- throwing downfield -- along with what is supposed to be a heavy dose of wildcat, sometimes just with Cribbs, other times with Cribbs and Wallace.

Eric Mangini Keeping An Open Mind Regarding QBs

Although many feel Jake Delhomme will open the season as Cleveland's starting quarterback, Browns head coach Eric Mangini isn't making a full commitment to Delhomme heading into training camp. According to Mangini, backup quarterback Seneca Wallace will see some time with the first-team offense. Mangini also stated he liked what both players had done so far and wanted to see a little more before he declared a starter.

"We have enough reps in training camp for everybody to get their fill," said Mangini. "They're going to both need an equal amount of reps and that's how it will be structured -- for the one and two to get the same amount of red area, etc. They may not be with the same group, but they'll get the same amount of work in those areas."

Fantasy Impact: 

Given Delhomme's age and ability to throw interceptions, it's likely Wallace will start some games for the Browns this year. But the Browns have a poor group of receivers and neither quarterback is going to offer much of anything to fantasy owners. If you need any indication of how undesirable the two quarterbacks are, they are both ranked below Ben Roethlisberger in our rankings - and Big Ben will be generating zero points for fantasy owners early in the season!
