Shane Vereen breaks bone in wrist, out a few weeks

Patriots RB Shane Vereen broke a small bone in his wrist on the first play yesterday, scheduled for surgery today. Out few weeks.

Fantasy Impact: 

It's a big hit to the Patriots, especially their passing game with WR Danny Amendola also a little banged up from Week 1. Perhaps most affected by this is RB Stevan Ridley, who was in the doghouse and benched after two fumbles. He now looks to be a safe start and back in line to get the bulk of the carries in what's a short week as the Pats host the Jets Thursday night. LeGarrette Blount likely serves as the backup to Ridley, especially if Brandon Bolden remains out. Perhaps even Leon Washington gets in the mix in the passing game if needed.

Where Patriots RB Stevan Ridley might be on the depth chart the next time it’s issued might be a closely-watched story line as the Patriots begin preparations for Thursday night’s home opener against the Jets. Ridley, who rushed for 1,263 yards last season, was asked if he thinks he needs to win his starting job back.

“Absolutely,” Ridley said. “Two turnovers, man, and I was out of there the rest of the game."

Fantasy Impact: 

Shane Vereen took over and looked great as a runner and pass catcher. You have to wonder just how much Vereen would have played if not for Ridley's turnovers, though. Even so, Vereen appears to be a PPR flex play at the very least most weeks. It's always hard to tell how the Patriots will use their RBs and a depth chart may not always mean a lot, but, Vereen looks a little safer right now in a Thursday night game against the Jets.

Patriots RB Shane Vereen looks like the kind of multi-threat weapon the Pats could use out of the backfield to take some of Aaron Hernandez’s touches.

Soft hands, can break a tackle, makes linebackers miss.

“This is going to be a year we really have to grind it out,” said Vereen.

Fantasy Impact: 

It's nothing we haven't been preaching for a while here at 4for4.com. We're high on getting Vereen near the middle of drafts. His ADP is the seventh round in 10-team standard leagues and he makes a real nice RB3.
