The Patriots added some speed to their offensive arsenal yesterday.

Running back Leon Washington signed a one-year contract, and he’ll be able to fill a couple of roles. Offensively, Washington is more of a change-of-pace back, similar to free agent Danny Woodhead.

The Pats could use Washington for depth purposes if Shane Vereen continues to emerge the way he did late last season.

Patriots RB Danny Woodhead once again was the change-of-pace back, and the Patriots' most well-rounded backfield player. He found a role in the Patriots’ up-tempo, spread attack and was the same reliable player he’s become known as. Shane Vereen has similar skills to Woodhead, but was not able to consistently get on the field for the Patriots. He flashed dynamic athleticism, speed and pass-catching ability in playing just less than 13 percent of the snaps this season. With Woodhead set to become a free agent, Vereen could be in line for a larger role next season.

Woodhead would seem to be on the team’s radar for a return, but could be lured elsewhere in free agency.

Patriots RB Danny Woodhead (thumb, probable) took full practice reps again Friday and is probable for Week 20. Woodhead will play, but may not see his usual snaps after Shane Vereen's big game last week.

Sources tell WBZ-TV’s Dan Roche the thumb injury RB Danny Woodhead suffered on the Patriots first offensive play will not keep him out of Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Fantasy Impact:

Woodhead became somewhat expendable with the fine play of Shane Vereen, who posted 124 total yards and three touchdowns against the Texans.
