Pettine: RB Duke Johnson is 'going to be tremendous' for the Browns

Browns HC Mike Pettine described the running backs as a motivated, talented, deep group, which includes second-year players Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West as well as rookie Duke Johnson. Farmer praised Johnson’s playmaking ability and supreme confidence. “I think he’s going to be tremendous for us,” Farmer said of the third-round pick.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Cleveland running game is murky at best. The team has two second-year players, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West, who both had fantasy-relevant moments last season, but they added Johnson to the mix in the Draft. He’s the best receiver of the bunch, so he should have a role on third-down at the very least. But he’s capable of stealing carries as well. The Browns should have a good running game, but it’s going to be a headache trying to project these three on a week-to-week basis.

The Browns got plenty of production from their two rookie running backs in 2014, as Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell combined for 1,280 yards and 12 touchdowns. The expectations are different for Duke Johnson because he’s a different kind of running back in a different set of circumstances, but his development is on the right track to add a new element to Cleveland’s running attack.

“He’s got a lot to learn, but he’s probably a typical rookie where he is right now,” HC Mike Pettine said. “I think we’ve all seen what he can bring – the explosiveness and how we can turn a handoff or a short pass into a significant gain with a back like that.”

Fantasy Impact: 

Johnson reportedly looked very good in his first practice, running for a couple of big gains. He's mired in a committee on a team with serious quarterback issues, so we're not expecting much from any one Brown running back.

Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot on the team's running back situation...

I think (Duke Johnson), the Browns' third-round pick out of Miami, will definitely press Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell for playing time, and might even win the job. More than likely, however, I think the Browns will mix and match the backs depending on the opponent. One might start one week and another one the next. At the very least, I think Johnson will see action early on as a third-down back, running and catching passes out of the backfield. He'll also return kicks and make an impact right away.

Fantasy Impact: 

Last year, HC Mike Pettine was handing out playing time based on practice performance each week, so this is shaping up to be a giant headache for fantasy owners.

Browns' new offense will feature more receptions for the running backs

Even though the Browns have revamped their passing game with wide receivers Brian Hartline and Dwayne Bowe, coach Mike Pettine has been clear Cleveland will go as far as Crowell – and fellow rookie Terrance West – can take them.

Instead of developing a rivalry for who gets the most carries, Crowell and West have embraced each other, and have even made a pact together. Somehow they kept it under the social media radar, but Crowell flew up to Baltimore this offseason to get some workouts in with West, and, in turn, West flew down to Atlanta.

That pact? Both Crowell and West want to rush for 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Crowell said the offense is generally similar to last season’s scheme, but there will be distinctions.

Two hints from Crowell: The pass protection is different and we will see him more as a receiver out of the backfield.

Fantasy Impact: 

Once the Browns were done with Ben Tate (Week 11), Crowell out-touched Terrance West 90 to 68 over the final seven games, but West had the last laugh, turning 20 touches into 106 yards and a TD against the Ravens in Week 17. (A seemingly healthy Crowell touched the ball five times for 22 yards.) The Cleveland running backs averaged 26.6 carries per game, so if the new offense does indeed feature the backs as receivers, there should be 30 or so touches for Crowell and West to split each week. Last season, HC Mike Pettine was handing out touches based on practice performance, so Crowell's current ADP (in the 5th round) seems steep given his uncertain workload and Cleveland's projected offensive struggles.
