Scouting report

CLE RB Terrance West - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Terrance West at Tennessee Titans
Generally, Terrance West performed well in relief of an injured Ben Tate. Nevertheless, in Cleveland’s most recent game, West rushed for 36 yards on 12 carries while fellow rookie Isaiah Crowell generated 55 yards on 11 attempts. The general consensus is that Crowell seems to have passed West on the depth chart. As long as you have the roster space, West should not be dropped, as the Cleveland backfield situation is fluid. However, he needs to remain on your bench this week with Tate returning and Terrance's apparent lower position in the pecking order.

CLE RB Terrance West - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Terrance West vs. Baltimore Ravens

With Ben Tate out of action, many were wondering how rookie Terrance West would perform in the spotlight. He passed his first test last Sunday with flying colors, rushing for 68 yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 22 yards.

The only negative with West this week is the matchup. Although two weeks represent a small sample size, Baltimore’s run defense is eighth in the NFL, allowing less than 100 yards per game. Additionally, the Ravens have not allowed a rushing touchdown. Regardless, West’s volume will be good enough to keep him positioned in RB2 territory.

CLE RB Terrance West - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Terrance West vs. New Orleans Saints

With Ben Tate out of action this week with yet another injury, rookie Terrance West will get the start against the Saints. In relief of Tate last weekend, West rushed for 100 yards on 16 carries, but fellow rookie Isaiah Crowell stole a couple of touchdowns.

Despite Crowell’s potential involvement, West retains plenty of intrigue. New Orleans struggled on defense in a 37-34 loss to Atlanta, with Falcons running backs Antone Smith and Jacquizz Rodgers each producing big plays that went for touchdowns. Cleveland’s offense is tilted towards the ground game and will be motivated to control the clock and keep Drew Brees and company off the field. West looks like a respectable RB2.

CLE RB Terrance West - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Terrance West at Pittsburgh Steelers
At various times during the offseason, it was thought Terrance West could challenge Ben Tate for a starting job. Ultimately, West did not play well enough in the preseason to earn significant playing time. While he remains worthy of a roster spot in fantasy leagues because of Tate’s past durability issues and Cleveland’s run-heavy offense, owners need to know the bench is the best place for him to be on opening day.

CLE RB Terrance West - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Most of the publicity surrounding Cleveland’s draft involved Johnny “Football” Manziel. However, there was another skill position player taken by the Browns who could also make a quick impact. Terrance West, out of Towson, was selected in the third round. West, along with Ben Tate, will be tasked with revitalizing a Browns backfield badly needing an infusion of talent. Will Terrance follow the path of many rookie runners before him and make an immediate impact?

Fantasy Upside
Last season, Cleveland’s passing game was the strongest part of their offense. This year, with Josh Gordon’s status in limbo, the Browns are aiming to win games the old-fashioned way with a ball-control attack. The Browns have some quality offensive lineman leading the way, namely left tackle Joe Thomas and center Alex Mack. New offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s system has been friendly to running backs such as Alfred Morris. Tate has flashed talent in the past, but has been prone to injuries.

Fantasy Downside
Although Tate has been injury-prone, he is the starter and will remain atop the depth chart if he performs well. And he probably will, given he played in a similar scheme to Shanahan’s under Gary Kubiak in Houston. Tate’s comfort level gives him a clear edge on West, who will be adapting to the complex NFL world after playing at a smaller school. There is talent on Cleveland’s offensive line, but the Browns do not possess across-the-board reliability up front. And defenses will be stacking the box unless the Browns show they can move the ball through the air. With Brian Hoyer struggling, Manziel looking far from impressive so far, and a highly suspect group of receivers outside of tight end Jordan Cameron and maybe slot receiver Andrew Hawkins, West and Tate will be seeing a lot of defenders.

Bottom Line
West is well worth drafting as either a Tate handcuff or a stand-alone reserve in deeper leagues. At some point, he could receive a lot of volume, making him a potential starter for fantasy teams. And even if that volume never materializes, West might be able to give you a few decent moments as a flex.
