Tevin Coleman determined to hold on to ball

One of the storylines at Atlanta Falcons' training camp through four practices was how smooth and comfortable running back Tevin Coleman looked catching the football.

"It's way better than last year," Coleman said. "It's pretty good now."

The Falcons knew they had such an element in Pro Bowler Devonta Freeman. However, Coleman seems to have elevated that aspect of his game, lining up on the outside and catching go routes with ease.

Now Coleman just has to continue to convince the coaches he can secure the football with more touches.

Fantasy Impact: 

They're counting on Coleman to complement Freeman in the running game and possibly step into the role as the primary kickoff returner. But Coleman had fumbling issues last season. He had three fumbles over a six-game stretch, including fumbles in back-to-back games against the Colts and Vikings. This is no surprise and it's been something we've heard all spring - the team thinks Freeman can be better with less work.

Going into this season, there is persistent talk of second-year back Tevin Coleman, who had one touchdown on 89 touches last season, taking much of the load off Devonta Freeman. The coaches are extremely excited about Coleman's breakaway speed and big-play potential, provided he remains healthy and tackles the fumbling issues that plagued him last season.

"We want to know what's best for the team, so giving it to him every snap may not be the best way for us to win ballgames," HC Dan Quinn said about Freeman. "Could he do it? Is he tough enough? 100 percent. But for us to play at our best, we're going to feature both the guys and use their strengths."

Fantasy Impact: 

Training camp, which starts Thursday, will give a glimpse of how much more the Falcons plan to incorporate Coleman. Quinn also talked about the possibility of giving Coleman touches as a kick returner with Devin Hester no longer on the team, but he'll have to prove he's over his fumbling issues. Like it or not, Coleman is going to cut into Freeman's workload which will limit Freeman's fantasy value. But that's life in the NFL at running back, and we still rank Freeman sixth among our backs in PPR and his projected 61 receptions is third most among RBs. Looks like his real value will be in PPR leagues.

Falcons RB Tevin Coleman got off to a promising start before suffering fractured ribs in the second game of the season. While out, Devonta Freeman took over the position and turned in a Pro Bowl campaign with 1,634 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns.

Despite Freeman’s success, the Falcons still have high hopes for Coleman, who was electrifying in the open field.

“I love it when a guy is challenged and comes back on a mission, and that’s certainly been the case with him,” Quinn said. “He’s fit. He’s strong. He’s been catching the ball out of the backfield. He’s a man here with something to prove and he’s certainly off to that start.”

Coleman believes there’s room for him and Freeman in the rushing attack.

“Oh yeah, definitely I think people under estimate it,” Coleman said. “Free (received) most of the playing time last year because I was hurt. They don’t even know what’s coming. It will be me and Free out there killing it.”

Fantasy Impact: 

All this talk about Coleman has us a little worried about Freeman's rushing workload. His role in the passing game should be fairly safe, giving him significantly more value in PPR formats than in standard leagues. Coleman's 11th round ADP makes him a nice attrition/injury play in the later rounds. He'd blow up if anything happened to Freeman.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (knee, probable) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week and is probable for Week 17. Freeman should see a big workload with Tevin Coleman out.
