Fantasy Upside
With Maurice Jones-Drew out of the picture in Jacksonville, Gerhart, a free agent signee, will get the bulk of the work at running back for the Jaguars this season.
Fantasy Downside
Gerhart hasn’t been a go-to guy in the NFL for any serious length of time in his four NFL seasons. His season-high for carries is 109 and he has 276 career carries. He’s also been dealing with a hip flexor injury during training camp. And Jacksonville’s QB situation is unsettled.
Bottom Line
Gerhart will be a starting running back, which has obvious value. But he had double digits in carries just one time in the past two seasons backing up Adrian Peterson in Minnesota. He did flourish filling in for an injured Peterson in 2011, but you have to wonder if he can handle 200-plus carries since he’s never done it in the NFL. His ADP is 40, which puts him in the fourth round of most drafts. He’s a decent receiver out of the backfield, so that’s a plus. But if I drafted him as my No. 2 back, I’d make sure I had a decent No. 3 as well, just in case.
