The San Francisco 49ers waived third-string quarterback Nate Davis on Monday, just more than a year after drafting him in the fifth round out of Ball State. Shortly after announcing they had parted ways with Davis, the team said it signed quarterback Troy Smith to a one-year deal.

Coach Mike Singletary had been openly frustrated with Davis’ slow development and work ethic despite the quarterback’s dyslexia that makes it difficult to grasp the playbook. Singletary hinted after Thursday night’s preseason victory over San Diego that Davis was a question mark to make the team, but he was still around Friday when the Niners trimmed their roster to the 53-player limit.

The move was made Monday as San Francisco prepares for its opener at NFC West rival Seattle, but announced hours after Singletary addressed the media.

The 49ers already have starter Alex Smith and backup David Carr, two former No. 1 overall picks. Singletary had said they could get by with only two quarterbacks, but opted to add Troy Smith. He was a fifth-round draft pick by Baltimore in 2007 and has appeared in 14 games with two starts in three seasons. The Ravens cut Smith on Saturday.

Ravens No.3 quarterback Troy Smith's job is definitely in jeopardy. Injuries at wide receiver and defensive line (along with suspension of cornerback Cary Williams) mean the Ravens need to use the roster spot on something else than a No. 3 quarterback. Smith did not help his case with a poor performance in the Ravens 27-21 loss to the Rams Thursday night. Smith threw two picks and completed under 50% of his passes against a weak Rams defense .

The best case scenario would be a trade offer for Smith but that is unlikely given the glut of backup quarterback on the market. Smith will probably be waived on Saturday.

Joe Flacco is unsure how the addition of new backup Marc Bulger will affect the chemistry of the quarterback group.

Flacco said it’s been an enjoyable experience working with quarterbacks Troy Smith and John Beck. But the recent signing of Bulger likely means Smith or Beck will get cut at the end of the preseason. There’s a chance that both won’t make it past the final cutdown.

While Flacco believes Bulger will be “a great backup,” he is wondering whether there will be some uneasiness amongst the quarterbacks.

“Hopefully, we just all get along well,” Flacco said over the weekend. “When you have a little bit of tension in the room, it doesn’t lend to playing well. Yeah, he might bring a thing here or there that helps me out. We’ll see. It’s all about going out there, preparing during the week and having a good time doing that. Hopefully, we can do that.”
