Chiefs QB Cassel has 'significant' hand injury

Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel’s right hand injury, suffered late in Sunday’s loss to Denver, is far more serious than initially thought and could end his season.

Cassel hurt his throwing hand in the home game against the Broncos, a 17-10 loss that dropped the Chiefs to 4-5.

Coach Todd Haley said Monday that the injury is “significant” and will require surgery.

With Cassel out, backup Tyler Palko, who has seen limited action in his two years with the Chiefs, will start Monday night’s game at New England and remain the starter for the foreseeable future.

Fantasy Impact: 

Palko plays New England's weak secondary this week. Despite that, he'd be a huge risk in any fantasy lineup this weekend. This means a possible drop in value for the likes of RB Jackie Battle and WR Dwayne Bowe, but we'd be more worried if Cassel had been playing at a high level.

Matt Cassel was knocked out in the fourth quarter because of an apparent injury to his right hand. Cassel left the stadium with his hand wrapped, putting in doubt his availability for next Monday night’s game against the Patriots in New England.

Fantasy Impact: 

Cassel was having a run of possible fantasy starts and New England was just another game on that list. His status now seems in doubt and we'll continue to update you as the week goes on. Tyler Palko is the backup QB to Cassel.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel suffered at least one cracked rib in the team's final pre-season game.

His status for Week 1 is yet to be determined.

Fantasy Impact: 

Unproven Tyler Palko's is Cassel's backup. The loss of Cassel would damage Dwayne Bowe's stock considerably, and would probably lead to extra doses of Jamaal Charles.

Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor directed two fourth-quarter touchdown drives for Baltimore, the first ending with Jalen Parmele’s go-ahead 10-yard touchdown run with 7:16 remaining as the Ravens defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-13.

Taylor later added a 5-yard TD run of his own, a dive to the right pylon that withstood a video review. He finished 5 for 11 for 88 yards.

Kansas City’s Tyler Palko completed eight of 13 passes for 95 yards, but produced 10 points in his three drive - a tying 4-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Copper late in the second quarter and a 12-play march culminating in a tiebreaking 30-yard field goal by Ryan Succop with 6:58 left in the third quarter.

The Ravens played Joe Flacco into the third quarter and he completed 12 of 24 passes for 124 yards, while Chiefs starting quarterback Matt Cassel was 6 for 14 for 73 yards.
