Scouting report

IND RB Zack Moss - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. New Orleans Saints

Zack Moss split the backfield carries with Jonathan Taylor 50/50 last week against the Browns, and he ended up with 18 carries and a reception for a total of 62 yards. The Colts seem to like their one-two punch at running back, despite how disheartening it is for fantasy managers hoping for some consistent fantasy value.

This week, Moss has a tough matchup against a New Orleans defense that ranks 11th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Moss also may be nicked up after being a bit limited in practice this week, so keep an eye on his status heading into the weekend. Assuming he starts, he’s a fringe RB2 option now that Taylor seems to be back in the swing of things. He also remains one of the best backup running backs in the league, so keep him rostered if possible.

IND RB Zack Moss - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Cleveland Browns

Zack Moss scored a touchdown and caught six balls last week against the Jaguars, but he was definitely in a two-back system with Jonathan Taylor, seeing 50% of the snaps, down from 80% the week before. Expect Taylor to usurp him even more as the season progresses, but the Colts will use both players. Moss has been very good and the Colts will need both players with Gardner Minshew set to start the remainder of the season.

This week, Moss faces an exceptional Cleveland defense that ranks fifth in aFPA to opposing running backs. Moss is expected to continue to lose more work to Jonathan Taylor, but he’s probably not going away completely, given the success he’s had this year. This could be an ugly game, featuring a lot of rush attempts on both sides of the ball, so Moss could still see double-digit touches, even if Taylor gets a full workload. We have Moss just outside RB2 territory this week and he should be considered a quality flex option in most leagues.

IND RB Zack Moss - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Jacksonville Jaguars

Zack Moss was not relegated to backup duties with the return of Jonathan Taylor last week. Instead, he led the backfield with 23 carries and a pair of receptions, totaling 195 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Meanwhile, Taylor saw just 10 snaps in his return. I expect that to even out as the season progresses, but it’s a good sign for fantasy managers who hoped Moss would retain value.

This week, Moss faces a tough Jacksonville defense that ranks second in aFPA to opposing running backs. It’s hard to trust the workload, but Moss has proven this season he can produce when given the touches. We have him ranked as an RB2 option this week, expecting Taylor to continue to be eased back into the offense.

IND RB Zack Moss - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Tennessee Titans

Zack Moss has been pretty good for the Colts as the main back the last three weeks. He’s averaging 4.2 yards per carry and has 322 yards from scrimmage and a pair of touchdowns in that span. However, Jonathan Taylor is expected to return to action this week. If you can stash Moss for later after we see how Taylor will be deployed - or traded? - that would be best. But definitely don’t start him in a tough matchup with his usage in question this week.

IND RB Zack Moss - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Los Angeles Rams

We’ll see what happens next week, for for now, Zack Moss appears to be the clear lead back for the Colts. He racked up 122 yards on 30 carries last week and added 23 yards and a touchdown on a pair of receptions. He was the fantasy RB4 on the week and was a big part of why the Colts came away with the victory.

Moss has a tough matchup this week against a surprisingly good Rams defense that ranks ninth in aFPA to opposing running backs. Moss’ workload makes him worth starting, but temper expectations in a tough matchup. If the Colts can keep it close though, Moss could wind up with another big day. We have him ranked as a RB1 option this week and he should be active in all leagues.

IND RB Zack Moss - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Baltimore Ravens

Zach Moss missed Week 1 while still recovering from a broken arm he suffered in early August, but he came back last week and rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown on 18 attempts. He also added 19 yards on four receptions and was on the field for an incredible 98% of the team’s offensive snaps.

The Ravens held the Bengals to 66 yards on the ground last week, and held the Texans to 72 rushing yards in Week 1. Expect Moss to fair a little better and to receive another full workload. We have him ranked as a strong RB2 option and he should be active in all leagues.

IND RB Zack Moss - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Houston Texans

Zach Moss is still recovering from a broken arm he suffered in early August, but he hasn’t been ruled out for Week 2 yet after missing Week 1. Deon Jackson received 18 touches - including five receptions - last week against the Jaguars, but he was held to a paltry 28 yards from scrimmage. If Moss is active, there’s reason to believe he’ll get his chance to earn the starting job while Jonathan Taylor is shelved. The Texans gave up three touchdowns to the Baltimore running back room in Week 1, so there’s upside for whoever gets the bulk of the touches for the Colts. If Moss is active, consider him a dart-throw option in deeper leagues.
