NYJ RB Michael Carter - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Carolina
The Jets expect Michael Carter to be the main back at some point this season. To start 2021, he will be the backup to Tevin Coleman. Carter will get opportunities but it remains a mystery on how many.

The Jets face the Panthers who were ranked 14th in aFPA to running backs in 2020. New York should generate some offense against an average defense.

Keep Carter on the bench for Week 1. He should get 7-10 touches in his first game and that will limit his productivity. Eventually, he will be a fantasy starter but not quite yet.

NYJ RB Michael Carter - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Jets used a fourth-round draft pick to select Michael Carter out of North Carolina. He rushed for over 1,000 yards the last two seasons and that's with sharing time with Javonte Williams. Carter’s speed, vision, and acceleration make him an ideal fit for the West Coast offense new offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur will run. He was very efficient catching the ball out of the backfield for the Tarheels and will be used in the Jets passing game as well. Carter is the favorite to be at the top of the depth chart entering the season.

Fantasy Downside
Carter's size was the biggest knock going into the draft. He isn't really built to run between the tackles, so the Jets will have to find him some open space to get him the ball. New York will probably spread the ball around to the tailbacks which means Carter won't be a 20 touches-per-game back.

Bottom Line
Carter has been going anywhere from the eighth to 10 round. He definitely has more value in PPR leagues as we expect him to catch around 45 passes. Combine the receiving yards and rushing yards and Carter should go over 1,000 yards from scrimmage. He will fit into most lineups as a high-end RB3 and he can serve as a flex on most rosters.
