Fantasy Upside
Going into the 2021 NFL Draft, there was some debate on who the best receiver was in the draft. We are pretty sure you will find out quickly it was Ja'Marr Chase. The former LSU Tiger and fifth overall pick is reunited with his former college quarterback with Cincy hoping that chemistry will carry over to the pro level. The scouting report on Chase highlights his quickness and stop-start ability. NFL defensive backs will have trouble with him in the underneath routes which is where Chase will make his living. Yards after the catch is what will make him elite. The Bengals have confidence in QB Joe Burrow and that will carry over all of his receivers including Chase.
Fantasy Downside
Chase skipped last season at LSU opting out with COVID-19 concerns. The time off shouldn't affect him, but he only had the one monster year with the Tigers so some might have concerns about that. The biggest knock on Chase is he doesn't possess elite size. There will also be pressure on him to perform right away because of where he was taken in the draft and some critics wanted Cincinnati to take an offensive lineman.
Bottom Line
The Bengals will need to replace nine targets per game from last season and Chase should get the majority of that. In fact, expect him to be the No. 1 Cincinnati wide receiver by the end of the season. Chase is being drafted in the sixth round, but don't be afraid to take him a round earlier if he is there. Expect 80 receptions and a 1,000-yard season for the rookie.
