The New Orleans Saints announced Thursday that receiver Joseph Morgan was placed on the reserve/suspended list and replaced by tight on Tom Crabtree on the 53-man roster. Coach Sean Payton declined to elaborate on the reason, and none has been revealed yet.

It appears as though it may have been a team suspension and not a league suspension, though that has not been confirmed. The move did not appear on the NFL’s transaction wire as of Tuesday.

Morgan, 26, has not played in a game since Week 1 (he’s been inactive five times this season). But when asked why during the course of the season, Morgan always insisted that there wasn’t any disciplinary reason for it. As Morgan has said, the Saints typically only use four receivers on game days, and the Saints had him below Marques Colston, Brandin Cooks, Kenny Stills and Robert Meachem in the pecking order.

The Saints have added a third tailback for Sunday night’s game vs. Green Bay.

The club promoted running back Edwin Baker from the practice squad on Saturday. To make room for Baker, the Saints released tight end Tom Crabtree. Both moves were announced on the NFL’s transaction wire.

The 23-year-old Baker signed with the Saints’ practice squad in September. He has played in three regular season games, all with the Browns at the end of 2013. In that three-game span, Baker rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns on 43 carries and caught eight passes for 57 yards. He started Cleveland’s final two contests.

In addition to playing for Cleveland, Baker has had stints with the Chargers, Broncos and Texans. A Michigan State product, Baker was a seventh-round pick of San Diego in 2012.

Fantasy Impact: 

Baker will back up Mark Ingram and Travaris Cadet for New Orleans, which has ruled out tailbacks Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson.

Saints have multiple ways to replace Jimmy Graham's production

How will the Saints replace Jimmy Graham?

The Saints could choose to reduce the number of multiple tight end packages and go with more four-receiver looks against Detroit. That would mean increased snaps for Brandin Cooks, Marques Colston, Kenny Stills and Robert Meachem. It could also mean the Saints choose to activate a fifth receiver on game day -- either Joe Morgan or Nick Toon.

Graham's absence will increase the workload for Ben Watson and, to a lesser extent, Josh Hill. We'll start to find out this week if recent tight end acquisition Tom Crabtree will have a meaningful role in the offense.

Finally, don't overlook running back Travaris Cadet. The Saints like lining him up outside as a receiver in four- or five-receiver sets, and there could be more of those on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: 

Hill is more of a "move" TE than Watson, though it was Watson who was targeted heavily (7) when Jimmy Graham was injured. Hill has a couple of touchdowns on the season and can run. Hill played a season-high 32 snaps in Week 5, so he figures to get extra snaps with Graham out.

Tim Wright may see increased playing time

More than ever, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to be leaning on rookie tight end Tim Wright.

With Tom Crabtree recently lost for the season, the Bucs now have three tight ends on injured reserve (Luke Stocker and Nate Byham already were there). Wright, who played wide receiver in college, already has made an impact. He has 34 catches for 366 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bucs almost certainly will add another tight end to the roster. But Wright’s playing time is going to keep increasing. He was viewed mostly as a receiver early in the year. But, now, Wright’s going to get a chance to be an every-down tight end.

Fantasy Impact: 

Wright hasn't found the endzone since Week 9, but he had eight catches for 75 yards last week. He's back in the mix as a streaming option.
