Patriots release WR Julian Edelman due to 'failed physical'

The #Patriots have terminated the contract of WR Julian Edelman, per the wire. He’s listed as a failed physical.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Edelman era is over in New England. This is probably good news for the plethora of new pass-catchers that the Patriots acquired in free agency, including Nelson Agholor, Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith and Kendrick Bourne. As a free agent, Edelman probably doesn't have much gas left in the tank if he's failing physicals, but we'll see where he lands.

The Patriots are not activating WR Julian Edelman from Injured Reserve today, which is not a surprise. And it’s unlikely that he plays next week.

Fantasy Impact: 

As Rapoport added, Edelman’s season is almost certainly over — and at age 34, his future is uncertain, as well, the tweet went on to say. It's possible Edelman could catch on with a contender next season if he wants to keep playing, but he's obviously coming off back-to-back injury seasons as well.

The Patriots designated wide receiver Julian Edelman to return from injured reserve Wednesday and he participated in practice.

Fantasy Impact: 

Edelman has been out since he had knee surgery in October. Today's designation means Edelman has a three-week window to return to action and the fact that he practiced today is a promising sign. Check back later in the week for updates on Edelman's practice participation.

Patriots WR Julian Edelman 'still a couple of weeks' away

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman still fully intends to return to play this season, but one source predicted to ESPN that the former Super Bowl MVP is "still a couple of weeks" away from rejoining the team.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Patriots are getting back into the playoff race so an Edelman return could be more likely if the trend continues. Edelman underwent a knee procedure earlier this season. As the story said, the Patriots play again in Los Angeles, this time Thursday night against the Rams -- and will spend the week quarantining before returning home, when Edelman is expected to be closer to getting back on the field.
