Panthers will consider using RB Christian McCaffrey in slot more

The Panthers also changed Christian McCaffrey’s preseason practice routine, never having him suit up three days in a row once they put on the pads. The Panthers have studied the usage of Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Marshall Faulk, two heavy-usage backs. They’ve at least considered the idea of using McCaffrey more in the slot.

Fantasy Impact:

The story didn't specify anything more about McCaffrey in the slot, other than it could help keep him healthy. Sunday’s game against the Browns will be McCaffrey’s first since that Miami game during Thanksgiving weekend last year. Like last preseason, McCaffrey did not play in any of the three exhibitions as the Panthers tried to have him at 100 percent for the start of the regular season, the story said. The team signed Foreman to take some of the workload, but the story said McCaffrey is still expected to have a huge role in the offense.

Payton: Saints RB Alvin Kamara's 'ability to run routes' reminiscent of Marshall Faulk

Saints beat writer Jeff Duncan reported Tuesday that Saints rookie RB Alvin Kamara "looks like the real deal and has the inside track to land the role in the Saints' nickel offense."

Sunday, Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk visited New Orleans Saints training camp on Sunday, for his job as an NFL Network analyst.

With Faulk at team headquarters, Payton was asked if he would push Saints rookie RB Alvin Kamara to pick Faulk's brain, but the coach took his response in a different direction.

"There's some traits that Kamara has that remind me (of Faulk) in regards to his intelligence, his ability to run routes," Payton said. "It was real evident in the first half hour of how smart (Kamara) was. He was in with the quarterbacks, he understood schemes, he understood route reads, concepts. And even on the field, it was impressive. It would be something that would be difficult to know if you were just looking at a test."

Tavaris Cadet held down this role in recent seasons but was not nearly as fantasy relevant as when Darren Sproles held the role. Cadet only averaged 6.3 PPR fantasy points per game, playing 23 percent of snaps in 2016. However, that was due to Cadet's lack of involvement in the rushing game (four carries all season). Cadet's caught 40 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns. If Kamara can make an immediate impact in the Saints nickel offense, it could eat into Mark Ingram's receiving production, after catching 96 balls over the past two years. It wasn't so long ago that Sproles had three consecutive seasons with 70+ receptions in this role.

Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell says that his knee is 'about 85-90 percent'

Speaking on NFL Network's Super Bowl Live on Wednesday, Steelers RB LeVeon Bell told Marshall Faulk that despite missing the Pro Bowl, he's been able to work out on the injured knee.

"The knee is close to 100 percent," Bell said. "I'm probably about 85-90 percent, been able to run on it a little bit. So I'm getting back to work out a little."

Fantasy Impact:

Bell was the #2 RB (behind DeMarco Murray) in 2014, and held the #3 PPG in standard formats. He was #1 in both categories in PPR formats. He's a shoo-in to have a first round ADP in 2015 fantasy drafts.

While stationed in Indianapolis for the Colts’ training camp, ESPN.com’s John Clayton says not to be “modest” about QB Andrew Luck’s potential.

“As pass-catchers, the Colts should be better than anticipated, and Luck is as billed. He has the look of being the most complete quarterback talent to enter in the NFL in decades. He makes all the throws. He's mature beyond his years. He's the real deal. And the Colts have weapons. Peyton Manning entered the NFL in 1998 with Marshall Faulk at halfback, Marvin Harrison at receiver, Ken Dilger at tight end and Adam Meadows and Tarik Glenn at tackles. He threw for 3,739 yards in a season the Colts went 3-13. To give Luck dependable targets, the Colts retained Reggie Wayne and Austin Collie. Third-round selection T.Y. Hilton is in development. The surprise in camp is fifth-year veteran Donnie Avery, who could emerge as a deep threat.”
