Scouting report

ATL WR Leonard Hankerson - Week 11, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Indianapolis
Leonard Hankerson hasn't played since suffering a hamstring injury versus the Titans in Week 7 and was limited in practice on Thursday. That said, he's expected to face the Colts on Sunday with Atlanta coming off its bye week. Hankerson will hurt Jacob Tamme's fantasy value without providing much value himself. He was often Matt Ryan's second target behind Julio Jones in the Falcons passing game but there was some talk this week about getting Roddy White more involved. Either way, Hankerson ranks as our WR50 for Week 11 and is nothing more than a WR4 at this point in the season.

ATL WR Leonard Hankerson - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Tennessee
Leonard Hankerson caught four of six targets for 37 yards in the Falcons Week 6 loss to the Saints. He was Atlanta's second-most targeted receiver, but he's averaged just 25 yards per game over his last two contests. While he remains a WR3 option for desperate owners, Hankerson's week-to-week ceiling isn't very high. He's also dealing with rib and hamstring injuries and even if he does play, he ranks as our WR40 for Week 8. You should be able to find better options if you need a flex spot filled for this week.

ATL WR Leonard Hankerson - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at New Orleans
Leonard Hankerson caught just one pass for 13 yards on four targets in the Falcons Week 5 win over the Redskins. He missed most of the first half with a rib injury, but returned to start the third quarter. He was ineffective, however, as Atlanta concentrated on getting the ball to Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman. Jones is currently battling a hamstring injury and might not play on Thursday night when the Falcons travel to New Orleans. If Jones is inactive and Hankerson suits up, "Hank Time" would be a decent WR3 option for Week 6. He currently ranks as our WR28 for this week, so monitor both his and Jones' statuses leading up to kickoff on Thursday night.

ATL WR Leonard Hankerson - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Washington
Leonard Hankerson caught 6-of-8 targets for 103 yards and a touchdown in the Falcons blowout win over the Texans in Week 4. Through four weeks Hankerson is now on pace for 68 catches, 964 yards and eight touchdowns, making him a WR3 option moving forward. The problem is that Roddy White made small waves earlier this week about his role, so it'll be interesting to see if White starts to receive some of the looks Hankerson had been receiving the past few weeks. Regardless, it's obvious Kyle Shanahan has made it a point to make Hankerson Matt Ryan's second read behind Julio Jones in many of his passing concepts. Hankerson is dealing with a thumb injury, but he should play this Sunday and is worth an add if he's still available in your league. He ranks as our WR28 for Week 5 and will be a FLEX option against Washington.

ATL WR Leonard Hankerson - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Houston
Leonard Hankerson caught three-of-six targets for 45 yards in the Falcons Week 3 win over the Cowboys. Even though Hankerson has played on just 66 percent of Atlanta's offensive snaps this season, he has out-targeted Roddy White 17-0 over the last two weeks. (White, meanwhile, has played on 84 percent of the Falcons offensive snaps.) There was a report last week by ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Falcons now view White and Hankerson as their "2 and 2A" wide receivers. It appears, at least in the early going, that Kyle Shanahan is favoring Hankerson over White when it comes to route combinations that get his No. 2 receiver the ball. Whether or not this sequence continues isn't known, but for now, it wouldn't be a horrible idea to add Hankerson if he's still available on your waiver wire. He could emerge as a WR3 at some point this season, which is what everyone thought White would be coming into the year. Hankerson isn't a viable starting option for Week 4 versus Houston, but monitor his usage moving forward.

ATL WR Leonard Hankerson - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Dallas
Leonard Hankerson caught six-of-11 targets for 77 yards and a touchdown in the Falcons 24-20 victory over the Giants. While Roddy White was a victim of the flow of the game, Hankerson benefited from how New York played Atlanta's receivers in pass defense. Through two weeks, Hankerson has played an average of 67 percent of the Falcons offensive snaps and will remain the team's WR3 behind White and Julio Jones. For now, Hankerson is off the fantasy radar, but if he continues to receive looks in the passing game, he could turn out to be a valid streaming option. He ranks as our WR79 for Week 3 and should be avoided against the Cowboys No. 5-ranked defense versus wide receivers.

ATL WR Leonard Hankerson - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The best-case scenario for Leonard Hankerson is that Roddy White has another injury-ravaged season. While still productive last year, White is coming off two injury-plagued years and is already scheduled to have surgery on his right elbow (though he's expected to play Week 1). Hankerson, meanwhile, has drawn praise from coaches, teammates and reporters alike in his first preseason with the Falcons and he would benefit the most if White were to miss significant time. The former Redskin has always had the size (6-foot-2, 211 pounds) and speed (4.43) to be a starter, but a knee injury sustained in November of 2013 robbed him of his entire 2014 campaign. Now that he’s paired with a quality quarterback in Matt Ryan and a creative play-caller in Kyle Shanahan, Hankerson has the opportunity to make a fantasy impact. If he gets enough looks, he could wind up being a WR3 at a bargain bin price for fantasy owners.

Fantasy Downside
Harry Douglas started 17 games over the last two years as White and Julio Jones battled injuries, yet finished as the WR33 and WR65 despite increased opportunities. What makes anyone think that Hankerson (who like Douglas will be Atlanta’s No. 3 receiver) will make an impact in fantasy? Granted, the Falcons have a new coordinator in Shanahan, but the Falcons passing game will still run through Jones even if Hankerson winds up receiving starting snaps with White banged up. Unless both Jones and White were to go down again, Hankerson won’t receive enough targets to be anything more than a WR4 this season.

Bottom Line
Hankerson’s value will come as a streaming option if White misses games, but he’s not worth more than a late-round flier in fantasy drafts. Shanahan’s offense will run through Jones so unless he goes down, Hankerson will have a limited fantasy impact. He's currently ranked as our WR80 in standard leagues.
