Scouting report

NYG RB Peyton Hillis - Week 10, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 – Peyton Hillis vs. Seattle

Peyton Hillis had four carries and 20 yards last week, but he also had five receptions for 50 yards, showing that he’s a player the Giants will still give the rock to on occasion with Rashad Jennings still ailing.

Hillis will likely continue to get change-of-pace touches behind Andre Williams in the short term, giving him some fantasy value, but with inconsistent touches it’s very risky to count on Hillis. We have him as a very low-end, risky RB3 option at best.

NYG RB Peyton Hillis - Week 9, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 – Peyton Hillis vs. Indianapolis
Peyton Hillis had six change of pace carries against the Cowboys before the bye last week behind starter Andre Williams, and he ended up with 29 yards, plus a four yard reception. This is the kind of workload fantasy owners can expect from the veteran with Rashad Jennings still hurt, and he has limited fantasy value. Hillis should remain on waivers.

NYG RB Peyton Hillis - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 – Peyton Hillis vs. Dallas
Peyton Hillis had five carries for 24 yards last week against the Eagles and he added three receptions and another 28 yards as the Giants were shut out by their division rival. With Rashad Jennings still hurt, Hillis is the primary RB2 for the Giants, which means he’ll continue to get a few touches. He also is surprisingly a better receiver than starter Andre Williams, giving him some potential there. However, he remains a risky option with his status on the depth chart and should remain out of your lineup.

NYG RB Peyton Hillis - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 – Peyton Hillis vs. Philadelphia
Peyton Hillis got a few touches last week after Rashad Jennings left the game with an injury, finishing with two carries and seven yards. Expect more, but not too much more, this week against the Eagles, as Jennings is expected to miss the game. Hillis will remain the number two guy behind Andre Williams, limiting his value and keeping him from being a viable waiver wire addition.

NYG RB Peyton Hillis - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Peyton Hillis vs. Detroit
Peyton Hillis filled in admirably for the Giants at times last year, but he enters the season third on the depth chart and coming off a preseason injury. While it’s possible Hillis could play a role in the running game in New York at some point this year, particularly if injuries strike the backfield again, he’s not currently worth rostering in most fantasy leagues.

NYG RB Peyton Hillis - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Peyton Hillis was signed by the Giants last season after injuries ravaged their backfield. Hillis ended up putting in a few modest outings, but never really distinguished himself as a viable fantasy option, finishing the year with only a 3.4 yards per carry average on 73 touches, and scoring only twice in 7 games.

Fantasy Upside
Hillis has very little upside, but the Giants running game right now is counting on a rookie fourth round pick, and on a 29 year old career backup in Rashad Jennings. If Hillis can get healthy, there’s always a chance he could play his way into a role.

Fantasy Downside
Hillis did very little with his chances last season. He had a couple of nice runs in spot duty, but during the three games that he was forced into starter carries, his best stat line with 20 rushes for 70 yards and a 3.5 yard average. He’ll have to do a lot better than that to win any playing time. Hillis is also currently hurt and out indefinitely, although early reports on his foot and ankle indicate that he’s starting to rebound quicker than anticipated.

Bottom Line
For now, it’s hard to see Hillis climbing higher than third on the depth chart in New York, and until he shows he’s healthy and actually competing for carries, he has little to no fantasy value.
