Scouting report

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs Panthers

It's actually pretty impressive that the Patriots were able to beat the Chargers on the road without Mac Jones throwing a touchdown. But it shows that Mac Jones is a rookie and will have average to poor games. Carolina has shown flashes on defense and have former Patriot Stephon Gilmore working his way into the defensive rotation. It may be another average game for Jones, but he's still worth a look if you need a second quarterback.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs Chargers

Mac Jones had his first 300-yard passing game last week against the Jets. It's just too bad he can't play the Jets every week. Especially this week, as he hits the road to face a Chargers team that is rested from their bye and absolutely angry and wanting to erase the nightmare that was the 34-6 drubbing from the Ravens. Jones will probably have another 200-plus yard outing and maybe two touchdowns. He continues to be a low-end QB2.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs Jets

Mac Jones may be the best rookie quarterback to this point of the season. But there are times it seems the Patriots take the ball out of his hands and it gets frustrating. Jones has shown he can sling the ball. Look at the 75-yard touchdown to Kendrick Bourne to give New England the lead back after throwing a pick-six. Jones can be up and down like that, but he's starting to feel a bit more comfortable. He gets the Jets again this week. He went 22/30 for 186 yards in the first meeting in Week 2. He's a back-end QB2 this week.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Texans

Mac Jones actually fared pretty well against the Super Bowl champion Buccaneers, throwing for 275 yards and two touchdowns. He did throw another interception and was sacked four times. Overall, Jones hasn't been too bad to start his football career. That hasn't fully translated to fantasy success. Perhaps this could be Jones' best game to date. He gets a Texans team that was just obliterated by the Bills, though this Patriots offense isn't anywhere near as explosive as the Bills offense. Jones is a low-end QB2 for this week.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs Buccaneers

Week 4 seemed to be Mac Jones' "Welcome to the NFL" moment, as he threw three interceptions against the Saints, the latest in a string of rough early performances from the first-round rookie quarterbacks in 2021. He takes the national stage for the first time in the NFL as the Patriots take on the Buccaneers and some guy that used to play for the Patriots for a long time. What's his name, again? Regardless, Tampa has been interesting on defense, to say the least, but just added Richard Sherman, so that should be very interesting to watch.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Saints

A rather pedestrian day for the Patriots rookie, but he didn't need to do much, thanks to the Patriots defense. At the very least, Jones has been taking care of the football, as he has zero turnovers in two games, certainly better than other top rookies to this point. This week, he faces a Saints defense that is already banged up and saw the effects of that at the hands of Sam Darnold, of all people, in Week 2. Jones may not light up the Saints, but he'll keep the Patriots offense in contention throughout, though that may not always translate into big fantasy points.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Jets

Not a bad start to Mac Jones' career. 29/39 for 281 yards and a touchdown, though it was in a losing effort. Now he faces the Jets, who allowed their former leader, Sam Darnold, to throw for 279 and a touchdown against them. The Patriots seemed to keep things fairly simple to start for Jones and he did just fine with what was he was given. And Jones is arguably a bit better than Darnold, so you can get a solid QB2 outing from Jones if you're in a 2QB league.
