Gore, 31, is in the final year of a contract extension he signed in 2011 that pays him an average annual salary of $6.5 million. He is setting out to prove that he is capable of being a productive player for a bit longer.

“I feel great and I know it’s a contract year for me,” Gore said. “I still love the game and I feel great and I still want to play the game. I feel like I’m still playing at a high level and you know I’m just coming out here week to week.

"And if I won’t be back here, then I’ll show the other teams what I can do.

“But I want to be back here.”

Fantasy Impact: 

Gore's status in San Francisco is at least up in the air. The team has Carlos Hyde waiting in the wings but did lose Marcus Lattimore, who retired because of injuries.

The San Francisco 49ers announced Wednesday that RB Marcus Lattimore has informed the team he intends to retire.

“This was a very difficult decision for Marcus and it was clear after speaking with him that he had put a lot of thought into it,” said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke. “He is a high-character young man who has done everything asked of him and more during his time with us and we have a great deal of respect for the strength and commitment he showed throughout the rehab process. It has been a pleasure to have Marcus as a member of our team and our community and we are confident that he will be very successful in whichever path he chooses to take in life. We look forward to supporting Marcus and wish him nothing but the best.”

Fantasy Impact: 

Lattimore had a tough go in his recovery from a horrible knee injury in college. The way is clear for Carlos Hyde in dynasty formats. He should take over as the lead back in 2015, when Frank Gore becomes a free agent.

With Marcus Lattimore contemplating his playing future and 10-year veteran Frank Gore in a contract year, the San Francisco 49ers may have addressed their future at running back.

The team announced Monday afternoon the signing of Kendall Hunter to a one-year contract extension through the 2015 season.

Hunter, a fourth-round pick of the Niners in 2011 out of Oklahoma State, tore the ACL in his right knee on the second day of training camp this summer. He has played in 43 games and has rushed for 1,202 yards and seven touchdowns on 262 carries.

San Francisco 49ers running back Marcus Lattimore is planning on retiring from the NFL due to knee issues, a league source confirmed to ESPN.
Lattimore was not at the 49ers' 13-10 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Sunday at Levi's Stadium and, per the reports, is contemplating his future.

Lattimore, who began practicing Wednesday, sat out practice on Friday. He blew out every ligament in his right knee on Oct. 27, 2012 at South Carolina and the 49ers made him a fourth-round draft pick six months later.

Fantasy Impact: 

Other outlets say an official decision hasn't been made as of yet. Lattimore spent the entire 2013 season on the non-football injury list and remains on that list this season. However, he did begin practicing last week with the hope that he would be able to play later this season. The 5-foot-11, 220-pound back suffered serious knee injuries in 2011 (tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee) and 2012 (right knee) during his time at the University of South Carolina.
