Scouting report

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Mychal Rivera is going into the final year of his rookie contract after being drafted No. 184 in 2013. The Raiders have openly said that they are open to trading the 6’3", 245 lb tight end. He catches the ball well but is a liability as a blocker and offers little after catch ability.

Fantasy Downside
Rivera fell back on the depth chart last season behind rookie Clive Walford for targets in the pass game and at times Lee Smith in blocking situations.

2016 Bottom Line
Rivera is depth at the tight end for the Raiders at this point and should not be on your fantasy radar unless playing in a deep dynasty format.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Chicago
In three games, Mychal Rivera has three receptions for 19 yards. At times last year, Rivera put up decent numbers, but the arrivals of Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree have made him a forgotten man. While the matchup is favorable on paper, Jimmy Graham is the only tight end who has scored against Chicago so far in 2015. Do not give Rivera an escape path from the waiver wire.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Cincinnati
The Raiders drafted Clive Walford to challenge Mychal Rivera, but injuries plagued Walford throughout training camp and the preseason, which enabled Rivera to maintain his starting spot without much of a fight. While Rivera was second on the Raiders in receptions last year, the additions of Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree will keep him in TE2 territory throughout much of the season. He is not a viable starter this weekend.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Now entering his third season out of the University of Tennessee, Mychal Rivera’s story has played out in the same manner it has for many tight ends. He had a quiet rookie season and then showed considerable progress in year two. Rivera caught 58 passes for 534 yards and four touchdowns in 2014 while providing pockets of fantasy productivity. Can Rivera take an even bigger leap in 2015?

Fantasy Upside
During a stretch of three games in 2014, Rivera caught 21 passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns were against Seattle, making the total even more impressive. Rivera also totaled seven receptions for 109 yards and a score later on in the season against San Francisco. Oakland drafted Clive Walford out of Miami to challenge Rivera for playing time, but Walford has missed an extensive number of practices and appears to be no immediate threat to Rivera. The Raiders, who would celebrate a mediocre season after three bad ones, will usually be the team on the scoreboard with fewer points, leading to more passing later in games.

Fantasy Downside
We know what Rivera can do when everything clicks, but more often than not, his stat lines resembles those of players you would find on the waiver wire. And the Raiders have welcomed a potential centerpiece to town in Amari Cooper. The first round pick is poised to dominate targets for a team expected to rely considerably more on the run. They have also added former 49er WR Michael Crabtree and he will also get plenty of looks from Derek Carr if healthy. Walford will eventually get into the mix as the season progresses and Rivera may end up spending the majority of his time as a blocker.

Bottom Line
More blocking and a secondary role in a run-first offense means Rivera is no more than a low-end TE2 who might be a compelling dart throw once in a while.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 – Mychal Rivera at Denver Broncos

The up-and-down Mychal Rivera was really, really down in Week 16, catching one pass for five yards. Rivera really has nowhere to go but up after a game like that. Plus, he caught six passes for 64 yards and a touchdown in an earlier matchup with the Broncos. Still, he remains more of a high-end TE2 who needs to be on the bench for someone who offers more stability.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 – Mychal Rivera vs. Buffalo Bills
The up-and-down sophomore season of Mychal Rivera took a downward turn in Week 15. Although Rivera was targeted 12 times, he ended up with seven receptions for just 39 yards. And his prognosis for this weekend is not good, as the Bills boast one of the best pass defenses in the NFL. The combination of Buffalo’s defense and Rivera’s inconsistency makes him a TE2 who should not be started unless you have no other alternative.

OAK TE Mychal Rivera - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 – Mychal Rivera at Oakland Raiders

Just when most fantasy owners had given up on Mychal Rivera, he goes out and catches seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown in Week 14 when Oakland stunned San Francisco 24-13. At times, Derek Carr seems to zone in on Rivera and other times he ignores him. That was the case earlier this year when Oakland played Kansas City, as Rivera caught only one pass. Starting Rivera would not be the worst move you could make this week, but there are plenty of other tight ends who ought to outperform him.
