LV WR Henry Ruggs - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Henry Ruggs had three catches for 97 yards last week, including a 48-yard touchdown. Ruggs hasn’t been terrible so far this year, with at least 46 receiving yards in every game. The Raiders’ passing offense hasn’t been a high-target environment for the wideouts, which lowers his floor, but his big-play potential makes him a nice risk/reward option.

This week, Ruggs has a tough matchup. The Eagles defense ranks second in aFPA to opposing wide receivers, and Ruggs may draw Darius Slay in coverage. Still, the signs from last week that the new head coach is willing to open up the offense make it worth risking Ruggs as a WR3. He’s getting just enough looks to mitigate the all-or-nothing risk he used to carry regularly.

Week 6 at Denver Broncos

Henry Ruggs has actually been mildly productive this season. His lowest fantasy points total is 5.6 in Week 1, and he’s had at least five targets in every game except one. Still, this Raiders offense is trending in the wrong direction, and now there’s off-field drama amidst Jon Gruden resigning in scandal. The Broncos rank 15th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers, and gave up a couple of big plays to Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson last week, but it’s risky to bank on Ruggs. We have him ranked outside starting territory and he should be considered a boom-or-bust WR3 option at best.

Week 5 vs. Chicago Bears

Henry Ruggs had three catches on six targets last week against the Chargers, ending up with 60 yards. The Raiders’ receivers have been really inconsistent and it’s hard to trust them in any given start, making Ruggs a risky bet in lineups. Consider him a boom-or-bust option this week against a vulnerable Bears pass defense that ranks 28th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. He could hit big on a long play, or end up costing you with a terrible game. Look to a more consistent option if you can.

Week 4 at Los Angeles Chargers

Henry Ruggs had four catches for 78 yards last week against the Dolphins. Ruggs is going to put up some big numbers and long touchdowns at times due to his playmaking speed, but picking which week he goes off will likely always be a challenge. He’s got a tough matchup against the Chargers this week, who rank firsts in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. With the matchup and his general boom-or-bust nature, we have him ranked outside starting territory this week.

Fantasy Upside

Henry Ruggs wasn’t great as a rookie with just 26 catches, 452 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 13 games. Ruggs did show off his speed though, with a couple of big plays and 17.4 yards-per-reception. Ruggs should benefit from a full offseason and he has considerable upside due to his playmaking ability.

Fantasy Downside

Ruggs is potentially just the latest in a long line of super-fast college players who get drafted super high and then fizzle out in the NFL. He caught just 60.5% of his targets last year and his PFF receiving grade was a lowly 55.6 last year, 22nd among rookie wide receivers – right below Freddie Swain. The Raiders’ offense doesn’t look like it’s going to get remarkably more prolific with Derek Carr under center, so Ruggs is going to have to assert himself to get more targets and then be more productive with them. That might be a tall order for the sophomore speedster.

2021 Bottom Line

Ultimately, Ruggs is free and is worth considering for a late-round flyer in best ball formats, but in redraft, owners will probably be looking for more week-to-week production. If you have a really deep roster and clog up spots with high-risk/reward players in case they pop, Ruggs might be a nice target. Otherwise, he should likely remain undrafted in most formats.

Week 9 at Los Angeles Chargers

Henry Ruggs was limited to just eight yards on two catches last week against the Browns. He is a boom-or-bust option in most weeks, but with tough wind conditions, it was difficult to expect him to catch a bomb downfield. This week, he’ll face a Chargers defense that ranks ninth in aFPA to opposing wide receivers, so fantasy owners should look elsewhere in most leagues. Betting on one of those long touchdowns is too much risk in most formats.

Week 8 at Cleveland Browns

Henry Ruggs was held to two catches and 35 yards last week against the Buccaneers. He’s a big play waiting to happen, but he’s averaging just 3.5 targets in the four games he’s played this season, making it hard to trust him on a week-to-week basis. Even in a pretty good matchup against the Browns this week, he should be considered a risky, boom-or-bust starter in deep leagues. He should stay on the bench in most formats.
