Chargers third-string running back Andre Williams broke a wrist on the final play of Sunday’s victory over Washington and will miss the rest of the season, coach Anthony Lynn said Monday.

Williams will undergo surgery.

While Williams played only five offensive snaps this season, he was a core special teams player with 95 special-teams snaps.

Fantasy Impact: 

That means Branden Oliver, who hasn’t played since Oct. 29, likely takes over Williams’ snaps on special teams. Oliver has played 68 offensive snaps and 15 special teams snaps this season.

Chargers RB Melvin Gordon (hip, knee, out) missed practice Friday after taking limited reps Thursday and is out for Week 17. With Gordon and Kenneth Farrow out, Ronnie Hillman and Andre Williams figure to work in some sort of timeshare against the Chiefs.

There was little question this weekend the Chargers would promote tight end Asante Cleveland from their practice squad, needing help at the position with Antonio Gates expected to be sidelined Sunday against the Colts.

It was a matter of how they’d create the roster room.

On Saturday, Andre Williams was notified. It’s him.

San Diego waived the former Giants running back to sign Cleveland to its 53-man roster. Williams theoretically could return next week, but he first must clear waivers Monday afternoon. Gates officially is listed as doubtful to play Sunday with a hamstring injury.

Fantasy Impact: 

Kenneth Farrow gained some positive press this summer and is shaping up to be the team's RB2 behind Melvin Gordon. The Bolts also signed Dexter McCluster this week.

Chargers RB Danny Woodhead has torn his ACL, source said. His MRI just came back. He's out for the season. Bad blow.

Fantasy Impact: 

This is especially brutal since there was a report yesterday that the team was optimistic that his ACL was intact. Melvin Gordon should see a huge workload for the remainder of the year and is worth a max bid if he's still somehow on the waiver wire after a two-touchdown Week 1. With Branden Oliver out for the year, the undrafted Kenneth Farrow served as Gordon's backup in Week 2. Farrow went to Houston, and gained 2,000 yards on 371 carries (5.39 YPC) in his final two seasons. Per PlayerProfiler.com, his closest comparable is Silas Redd, and he has good burst and agility even though his 40 time isn't good. The Chargers also picked up Andre Williams after he was cut by the Giants. He may get a few touches each week, but this is shaping up to be Melvin Gordon's show.
