PIT QB Russell Wilson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Cleveland Browns

After disappointing in one of the best matchups in the league, it's certainly going to be tough to trust Russell Wilson again this week. While not the worst matchup, Cleveland is still 15th aFPA against quarterbacks this season. Combine the downgrade in the matchup with the prospective weather, and this has a recipe for a ground-and-pound attack for Pittsburgh in Cleveland. Currently, Cleveland is supposed to get rain during the game and have sustained winds around 17mph with gusts up to 35mph. I don't usually worry about weather but it is right on the cusp (20+ mph sustained winds) where it actually starts to impact things for fantasy.

UPDATE: The wind will be lower than expected, around 9-11mph sustained during the game. It will be a mix of snow and rain, which isn't the worst, but something to note.

PIT QB Russell Wilson - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Baltimore Ravens

I doubted Russell Wilson, but I think it's clear he is better for this Arthur Smith offense. While last week wasn't his best, he still made plays when the Steelers needed them most. The chemistry he has with George Pickens is real and the throw he made to Mike Williams that effectively won them the game was a thing of beauty.

This is one of the best matchups for quarterbacks as the Ravens rank 30th aFPA against quarterbacks. We should likely expect Arthur Smith to stick to his guns for a little while, but it's clear the way you beat the Ravens defense is through the air. Wilson is surprisingly a QB1 this week, but the matchup is just so good. If you got him, start him.

PIT QB Russell Wilson - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Washington Commanders

The Steelers are 2-0 since switching to Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback and the passing offense looks much more stable since he took over. The efficiency last week against the Giants was solid, albeit a bit disappointing for fantasy.

This week Wilson faces off against a Commanders defense that is 18th aFPA against quarterbacks this season. The Commanders have turned into a bit of a run funnel, and without Marshon Lattimore this week they should still be vulnerable against opposing WR1's. You're starting Wilson in Superflex, but you likely have a better option in standard leagues.

PIT QB Russell Wilson - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs, New York Giants

The expectations could not have been lower for Russell Wilson in his first start and the memes flew in the first half. However, Wilson reverted back to the "Let Russ Cook" era Wilson and finished as one of the top quarterbacks on the slate to everyone's surprise.

The matchup against the Giants is an improvement over last week against the Jets as the Giants are 21st aFPA against quarterbacks so far this season. The limitations on the offense from a pace perspective will always be an issue for projections, but it is a positive matchup. He's a QB2 on the week, but you could certainly do worse.

PIT QB Russell Wilson - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs, New York Jets

Russell Wilson will almost certainly be making his debut in a Steelers uniform this weekend. Head coach Mike Tomlin has played coy all week, but George Pickens spilled the beans that he's been working late with Wilson all week in anticipation of his first start.

Expectations are low for Wilson, especially against a tough Jets defense. New York is 4th aFPA against quarterbacks so far this year. We'll have to see how different the offense looks with Wilson under center versus Justin Fields. It probably benefits the running backs and tight ends more than anyone else. Wilson is a risky start in general, but the tough matchup makes this a pass in his first start.

PIT QB Russell Wilson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 @ Atlanta Falcons
Russell Wilson is listed as questionable after picking up a calf injury this week and logging limited practices on Thursday and Friday. Wilson remains a very limited option outside of the top-24 quarterbacks on the week, even in a positive matchup against the Falcons.

Stay tuned for more on Wilson.

PIT QB Russell Wilson - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Look, Russel Wilson is an extremely low-ceiling fantasy asset who will do his best work on deep throws this year. Luckily, he has a great partner for those 50/50 balls in George Pickens. Maybe he's able to connect on a few of those a game to replicate his QB14 performance from 2023.

Fantasy Downside
The downside is growing with the calf injury that lingered just a little bit longer than the team expected. After shutting down questions about Justin Fields being the starter, it now sounds like the door is back open for a competition with Fields. The receivers are also a downgrade from Denver, but assuming his new-found love for check downs continues, he has two solid options out of the backfield and a solid security blanket in Pat Freiermuth.

2024 Bottom Line
At QB26, it seems highly unlikely Wilson is an option in redraft leagues with 1QB, but he presents a possible lifeline as a late option for quarterback-needy teams in best ball or
Superflex. His ceiling is probably a mid-end QB2 and the floor is him being benched before the season even starts. Draft accordingly.
