Fantasy Upside
We know one thing. Zach Wilson will start Week 1 for the Jets. The team didn't bring in a veteran QB and the other guys who play the position on the roster are unknowns. With that said, Wilson looked every bit an NFL quarterback last season at BYU. He threw for 3,692 yards, 33 touchdowns and three interceptions. Scouts raved about his ability to make off-platform throws i.e. Patrick Mahomes while throwing the ball downfield with consistency.
Fantasy Downside
Wilson is being thrown into the fire in New York on a franchise that has been considered incompetent and dysfunctional. Yes, there is a new coaching staff and new hope, but it seems the Jets have had issues getting it together for a while. Wilson also was a non-prospect until last season when he broke out with the Cougars which some considered a very soft schedule.
Bottom Line
Wilson has some fantasy value for 2021, mainly because he is already the starter and there is zero competition. The Jets did get him some help offensively but that might be a work in progress. If you are in a keeper league, Wilson is definitely worth having on your roster as a third QB, but you can also get away with him as QB2 if you have a top 4 quarterback. A 4,000 yard passing season is definitely possible with 20+ TD passes which are serviceable numbers for a No. 2 and rookie QB.
