4for4 Staff Draftmaster Recap - 12 Team PPR League

But, seriously, once again the scouts and contributors here at 4for4 Fantasy Football got together to take part in another Draftmaster league hosted on MyFantasyLeague.com. Last year was the first time money was put on the line thanks to bossman Josh Moore, and this year the stakes have been raised a little, so we all have incentive to want to draft well.
If you’re not familiar with Draftmaster leagues, there are no trades or transactions, so the teams we draft are the teams we get points from - all season long. The site will automatically figure out the best lineup each week and that’s how we earn our points. The entire season is hands off. A big key in these leagues is to stay healthy.
This was a 12-team PPR league with 16 rounds and al ineup of 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 flex, 1 TE, 1 K and 1 defense. We drafted over email from Aug. 12-18. Each team drafted one defense and one kicker and teams were not allowed more than 2 QBs and 2 TEs.
This is an opportunity for all of us to practice against some very good competition. To help our subscribers, I like sharing the results of our draft as well as picking the brains of each scout to get a better idea of what they are thinking before, during and after the draft. So again following this year’s draft, I asked each scout a few questions: their draft strategy, surprises of the draft, what they regretted during the draft and their favorite early and late round value picks.
Let’s see how it went:
RB Crazy
I don’t ever remember a draft where waiting at so many positions was considered a must. But that’s been general thinking this year: quarterback, wide receiver and even tight end are very deep. Now, that doesn’t mean go out and take your kickers and defenses early, but generally does necessitate looking for RBs early. And, that was certainly a trend in our draft. In fact, 10 picks in the first round were running backs, leaving Calvin Johnson (Andy Rioux) and Brandon Marshall (Brandon Niles) as the only non-RBs to get picked in the first round.
“[I was surprised] how quickly the running back depth evaporated,” Jordan Heck said. “I thought with [starting] three wide receivers that people would wait longer on running backs, but they were gone in a hurry.”
Andy agreed with that, and after going WR-WR with his first two picks, he ended up feeling a bit thin at RB having to address that position in the middle rounds.
“All of the running backs I wanted got gobbled up before I could take them,” Andy said. “It's natural to be thin at RB if you don't draft them earlier, but I'm thinner than I want to be.”
TE Jimmy Graham went to Brandon with the second pick in the second round and Graham was the first non-RB/WR to be selected. In fact, Brandon and Andy were the only two GMs not to select a RB with either of their first two picks. Brandon, of course, took Marshall and Graham at 1.11 and 2.2 while Andy went with WRs Megatron and Dez Bryant at 1.9 and 2.4.
“I was surprised by just how many RB's were off the board by my third pick,” Brandon said. “I knew they'd go fast, but I thought a guy like Lamar Miller might be available in the late third. Not at all…”
Six teams decided to go RB/RB with the first two picks. And that wasn’t by accident, certainly not for me, nor Bob Harris, who were two of those six owners.
“I've been looking to go running back-heavy in recent drafts and that was the approach here,” Bob said.
Chris Kucharski added, “Even though it was a PPR league, I wanted to make sure I had strong running backs.”
Four owners decided to go the RB/WR route, including Scot Berggren and Jordan. But even they admitted they were looking at RB or the best possible value. “I wanted to get two RBs with first two picks, but, picking sixth, I felt there was a better value in WR Julio Jones with my second pick,” Scot said.
“My draft strategy was to take the best player available,” Jordan said. “I wanted to grab running backs early, but if there was another player I liked better then I was going to take them.”
Jordan would take WR AJ Green with his second pick at 2.3.
Picking from the No. 5 spot, Jonathan’s goal was to get one of the top-tier players at both RB and WR, and he was very successful in doing that with RB CJ Spiller and WR Demaryius Thomas.
“I don't like going RB/RB this year because I think you miss out on one of the top six WRs, and I like some RBs in the third round,” Jonathan said. “I ended up with Lamar Miller there, who I have on a lot of teams. Other than that, I was looking to wait on QBs and TEs.”
The first five picks went pretty much as you would expect: Adrian Peterson to Chris, Jamaal Charles to John Paulsen, Doug Martin to Denny Carter, Arian Foster to Josh Moore and CJ Spiller to Jonathan Bales. After that, RB becomes a crapshoot with a lot of good choices, but all of them are considered a notch below the top-four or five. Trent Richardson went sixth to Scot, LeSean McCoy went seventh to Bob Harris, Matt Forte went eighth to me, Ray Rice 10th to Jordan and Marshawn Lynch to Matt De Lima at 12.
In the second round, Alfred Morris went to Matt at 2.1, I took Darren Sproles at 2.5 followed by Steven Jackson to Bob at 2.6 and Josh took Chris Johnson at 2.9. Denny Carter picked Andre Johnson as 2.10, Reggie Bush went to John at 2.11 and DeMarco Murray to Chris as 2.12.
Waiting is the Hardest Part
So everyone knows you’re supposed to wait on QB, but how long?
My intention was to wait until somewhere between rounds 5-7, based on following a lot of scouts on Twitter and seeing their results. I often saw QBs like Tony Romo or Eli Manning last until the sixth or seventh, depending on the number of teams in the league. I was perfectly happy to go that direction and load up on RBs and WRs - until it was my pick at 3.8 and no QBs had been drafted.
It was there I took Aaron Rodgers - and kind of felt like maybe it was too soon… Matt De Lima would take Drew Brees a few picks later at 3.12 as the second QB to come off the board.
Matt’s quote was probably one of favorite from the draft: “Only among a group of fantasy football experts can you draft Drew Brees at the bottom of Round 3. So I think I will.”
But Matt made a good point. I’m not sure guys like Rodgers and Brees will make it that far in most typical drafts, so when you have a bunch of fantasy guys who know you’re supposed to wait on QB, this is what can happen.
While maybe the draft slots were a little extreme for guys like Rodgers and Brees, this draft still proved you can get some nice QB value just about anywhere in the draft. Peyton Manning was the third QB taken and he went to Scot at 4.7. Cam Newton went to Chris at 4.12, but when Chris saw the QB talent fall, he wished he would have waited even longer.
“I could have got someone close in talent later,” Chris said. “The QB run came later than I anticipated. I could have waited a little longer.”
After Matt Ryan was taken at 5.7 by Bob, the next QB didn’t come off the board until the seventh round and that’s really where the QB run started. Seven QBs were taken between 7.2 and 8.8, which is pretty late, especially for a 12-team league. John grabbed Colin Kaepernick at 7.2, Josh took Tom Brady at 7.4, Andy nabbed Matt Stafford at 7.9, Matt actually got his BACKUP quarterback at 7.12 in RGIII, Brandon took Andrew Luck at 8.2 and Jordan took Russell Wilson at 8.3. Tony Romo went to Jonathan at 8.8.
Denny waited the longest on QB, perhaps due to Matt getting his backup, even a couple of rounds after the run was over. His first QB taken was Jay Cutler with pick 11.3 and then went with rookie EJ Manuel with pick 14.10 as his QB2.
Gronk Factor
Another big question in drafts this year is where to draft Gronkowski, which 4for4 Senior Editor John Paulsen broke down in an August 5 article.
In this draft, Gronk ended up going to me with pick 5.8. This was a pretty tough decision for me. I usually like to play drafts by the book, but tried to convince myself in this one to take a few chances, and this was be a pretty big one. I struggled between safe-pick Vernon Davis and Gronk here, and admit I quickly read through John’s piece, going through the checklist on when to take him, and thought it was a pretty good spot.
After Graham in the second round, another TE wasn't picked until John selected Witten with pick 5.2, then my pick of Gronkowski, who was the third overall TE to go. After taking Gronk, I wanted to make sure I got a pretty good option for a TE2, and wanted a TE with a bye week after Week 6, in case Gronk didn’t come off the PUP list and missed the first six weeks, hopefully a worst-case scenario. If Vernon Davis was available with my next selection at 6.5, I convinced myself I was going to take him, but he went to Jordan at 6.3. (I ended up getting Brandon Myers with pick 12.5)
John had this to say about Gronk and Vernon Davis: “Rob Gronkowski made it to the 5th which doesn't happen often. He could make or break Scott's team … I thought Vernon Davis at 6.3 was a nice value.”
After that, TEs were pretty much scattered through the rest of the way, with a mini-run between the mid-eighth and late-ninth rounds: Tony Gonzalez was next to go at 7.1 to Chris, then came the run of Greg Olsen at 8.4 to Andy, Kyle Rudolph to Scot at 8.7, Jermichael Finley to Denny at 9.3 and Jared Cook at 9.7 to Bob.
Bargain Shoppers
Everyone wants to know what the scouts think are the best value picks. So I asked each scout to give me at least one from the early rounds and one from the late rounds.
In the early rounds, a few were happy or liked what they saw from RBs after the group in the first two rounds. Maurice Jones-Drew went at pick 3.4 and Josh was more than pleased to get him there. In fact, Josh went RB/RB/RB with his first three picks, setting himself up with Foster, CJ2K and then MJD.
“I love my selection of MJD at 3.04,” Josh said. “He's a known commodity who slips due to perceived injury risk, but he's healthy now. I don't think many would be surprised if he finishes as a top-6 back again in 2013.”
Matt also liked where Josh took MJD: “Maurice Jones-Drew at 3.4 is a great value. I'm not sure why the fantasy community is so low on him given his age and track record.”
Chris got DeMarco Murray with pick 2.12 and like his value a lot. “I really felt he should have been taken early second round,” Chris said.
Brandon got LeVeon Bell with pick 3.11 and mentioned him has his best value. Andy, in search of RBs in rounds five and six, thought he got some nice value by taking Chris Ivory at 5.9 and Daryl Richardson 6.4.
One WR Denny thinks you should pay attention to is Andre Johnson, who was the first receiver to go after what everyone feels is a top-six tier of guys.
“Andre Johnson (2.10) was my favorite early round pick,” Denny said. “It's not like he fell well below his ADP, but I was glad to have him as a wide receiver anchor. DeAndre Hopkins' mere presence should take significant coverage pressure off of Johnson this year and there's really no reason he'll lose targets in the Houston offense. He's among the rare breed that, given 16 games, is guaranteed 150 targets. He's also a touchdown regression candidate, which is a nice little plus.”
As for the late rounds, there was still plenty of value around, and that value tended to be at WR and TE in the eyes of a lot of scouts. Many thought John made a nice pick in round 10 with Rueben Randle, especially after taking Hakeem Nicks in the fourth. Randle could put up some nice games even as a WR3, but with Nicks’ injury concerns as of late, Randle could step in and be even more productive.
“I really like John Paulsen's pick of Rueben Randle at the end of round 10,” Josh said. “In a best-ball format he should get the nod at least a few times in 2013, and he's great Nicks insurance.”
Some other receivers mentioned by scouts were: Alshon Jeffrey (11.2), Greg Little (11.9), TE Antonio Gates (12.12), Kenbrell Thompkins (14.4) and TE Tyler Eifert (14.6). On the QB side, a couple of scouts pointed to Michael Vick, assuming he wins the job, as a real nice value at 13.2.
PC Drafter
Last year for our 4for4 Draftmaster league, I put the results into PC Drafter for a couple of reasons: 1) it gives me a nice report on all the rosters as well as a complete draft recap list, which you can find with this story, and, 2) I wanted to see the final results and who PCD calculated to be our preseason on paper winners in both starter points and overall points.
This year, John was our winner in both categories, but it was pretty close. In overall points he finished with 3,117, just 16 ahead of Josh at 3,101 and 54 ahead of me with 3,063. In starter points, John was the only one to crack the 2,000-point mark with 2,006 points. But again, it was close with Chris collecting 1,984 points and I had 1,981 points for third.
So does PCD’s predications really mean anything?
I decided to look back on last year’s results from PC Drafter to see how accurate it predicted our top-three finishers. Yes, I do save all that stuff…
In our 2012 league, I took home first place while Matt placed second and Andy third. Believe it or not, PC Drafter predicted me with the most overall points immediately after the draft with Matt third and Andy fourth. So PC Drafter was pretty accurate in its prediction, which may be something else to think about if you’re considering using the program at your draft.

I like my team, so considering the quality competition, I'm happy with how things worked out.

Rob Gronkowski made it to the 5th which doesn't happen often. He could make or break Scott's team.

Not drafting my third RB earlier. Bradshaw could be a solid RB3 or he could be questionable all season. At least in this format I don't have to decide whether or not to start him.
5. Your favorite early round value pick?
I really like Witten in PPR formats in the late 4th/early 5th. He has averaged 94 catches in the last three seasons. Of the other teams, I thought Vernon Davis at 6.03 was a nice value.
6. Your favorite late round value pick?
I like Rueben Randle in the 10th even though it's a bit early. He gives me insurance in case my 4th round pick, Hakeem Nicks, misses any time. Also, it's looking like Michael Vick could be a quality QB2 in this format. Of the other teams, Kenbrell Thompkins is looking like a nice value pick in the 14h. His arrow is pointing up.

1. What was your draft strategy?
My goal in any draft this season is to secure running back reliability in the opening rounds without becoming fixated on stockpiling backs at the risk of passing value plays on wide receivers and, in rare circumstances, quarterbacks. I'm all about QB by committee and/or waiver wire, but I'll never ignore a top-12 quarterback who has fallen a decent distance from his ADP.
2. Did it work?
I feel fine about my team, which -- if I'm being perfectly honest -- makes me a tad uncomfortable. It's the teams that have volatility built into them that I get most excited about. I'd never say that a safe team can't win a fantasy title. My anecdotal evidence tells me that I prefer teams that lean more toward the risk-reward paradigm than the conservative approach.
3. Biggest surprise?
I surprised myself by taking Amendola at the end of the fourth round. It's the first time I've done that, and I would have never taken him there in a standard league. I think he has a chance at exceeding his late-fourth round value in PPR, if only by a little. It's really the only time I've strayed from big, red zone relevant receivers this summer.
4. In the draft, I regret:
Siding with McFadden over David Wilson. It was, in my estimation, an ultra conservative move that sacrificed Wilson's enormous upside for a guy whose ceiling will be suppressed by a horrendous offense. Wilson, of course, is the only running back who could be RB8 or RB25. If I had a fantasy football genie, I'd beg him to switch DMC for Wilson.
5. Your favorite early round value pick?
Andre Johnson (2.10) was my favorite early round pick. It's not like he fell well below his ADP, but I was glad to have him as a wide receiver anchor. DeAndre Hopkins' mere presence should take significant coverage pressure off of Johnson this year and there's really no reason he'll lose targets in the Houston offense. He's among the rare breed that, given 16 games, is guaranteed 150 targets. He's also a touchdown regression candidate, which is a nice little plus.
6. Your favorite late round value pick?
Miles Austin (8.10) was a late-round value play. His constant hamstring issues scare me a bit, but I'm not a doctor -- nor do I play one on the Internet -- so I try not to let that dictate my picks. He's going to once again see a lot of single coverage as defenses obsess over ways to stop Dez Bryant and he's a central cog in an offense that'll throw it 600 times.

1. What was your draft strategy?Let the draft dictate my strategy and not be afraid to wait on QB, TE or WR given the depth at QB/WR and the drop-off at TE.
2. Did it work?
I think so. I pounded RB early and love my stable of Arian Foster, Chris Johnson and Maurice Jones-Drew. I was able to nab perennial top-flight QB Tom Brady in the 7th and cobble together WR and TE production in the middle and late rounds.
3. Biggest surprise?
Pierre Thomas going in the early 6th round. I like him as a Sproles handcuff and flex option, but was surprised to see him go several rounds ahead of his ADP to Mr. Brandon Niles.
4. In the draft, I regret:
In a league without any transactions throughout the year, you need to hit at least a couple of home runs on draft day. I kind of wish I would have bypassed a late-round guy like Jeremy Kerley for the upside Percy Harvin would have brought to my lineup if he can return and be productive around the half-way point of the season.
5. Your favorite early round value pick?
I love my selection of MJD at 3.04. He's a known commodity who slips due to perceived injury risk, but he's healthy now. I don't think many would be surprised if he finishes as a top-6 back again in 2013.
6. Your favorite late round value pick?

For the most part, yes, although I'm weak at TE with Daniels and Housler. I was looking to land Greg Olsen at TE, but I waited too long.
3. Biggest surprise?
For my team, the biggest surprise was taking Greg Jennings. I don't think I'll end up with Jennings on any other teams this year, but I was a bit weak at WR and he dropped too far.

I regret not taking Jermichael Finley in the eighth round.
5. Your favorite early round value pick?
When Andy Rioux took Calvin Johnson at No. 9 overall, that was great value. I also like Aaron Rodgers in the middle of the third round. I considered him earlier.

I like Alshon Jeffery in the 11th. Big wide receiver in a new pass-first offense coming off of an unimpressive rookie year. Great chance for value.

Wanted to get 2 RBs with first 2 picks, but, picking 6th, I felt there was a better value in a WR (J. Jones) with the 2nd pick.

1. What was your draft strategy?
I've been looking to go running back heavy in recent drafts and that was the approach here.
2. Did it work?
Feel I made out well in that regard with LeSean McCoy, Steven Jackson and David Wilson as my top picks. Love Mark Ingram where I got him, too. The early focus on running back didn't keep me from landing a strong receiving corps (albeit one that's somewhat New Orleans slanted).
3. Biggest surprise?
That I was able to get my Mark Ingram as my RB4 in the seventh round. I'm one of those weirdos who LOVE Ingram this year. Well, I love him as my fourth back. The thing is, nobody wants Ingram to succeed more than the Saints. The opportunity is there. The question is whether Ingram is the guy they thought he was when they burned a first-round pick to secure his services three years ago.
4. In the draft, I regret:
The same thing I always regret; taking a quarterback (Matt Ryan) earlier than I really needed to (fifth round). It seems like I find a hole about that point in every draft where I'm not keen on the value at other positions. Then when I see Andrew Luck and Tony Romo going in Round 8, it hits me.
5. Your favorite early round value pick?
I love getting Cecil Shorts in Round 6. Although drafted as my WR2, all indications are he's ready to make a step up from last year. If he does, I'll be getting WR1 numbers from him.
6. Your favorite late round value pick?
Was surprised to find Tyler Eifert available in the 14th round. Given recent reports out of Cincinnati, it sounds like the rookie will be an immediate and significant contributor.

1. What was your draft strategy?
Load up on RBs and pretty much wait on everything else until I liked the value
2. Did it work?
I couldn’t resist taking Rodgers at 3.8 and then ended up taking Gronk in the 5th and those were two positions I really thought I’d address later and couldn’t stop myself.
3. Biggest surprise?
Rodgers and Brees lasting until later in the third round. I figured everyone would wait on QB but I really didn’t think no QBs would be taken until that point.
4. In the draft, I regret:
Not sticking to my strategy a little more. But in a draft like this, everyone knows their stuff, so taking a risk or two (taking Rodgers as the first QB and Gronk in the 5th) is something I don’t have a problem doing.
5. Your favorite early round value pick?
I didn’t think Sproles would make it back to me in the second round of a PPR league. He went where he should, but I’m used to him going right before I’m about to get him.
6. Your favorite late round value pick?
I think Brandon Myers as Eli Manning’s TE in NY could be a great fit. Eli targets the TE in the red zone and Myers could have some big games until Gronk gets healthy for me.

1. What was your draft strategy?
Since we have to play three receivers, and since I believe the running back position is deeper this year, I reverted back to the strategy I've used most frequently in recent years, where I tried to get receivers earlier than most. Last year in pretty much every draft, I targeted running backs right away because I felt receiver was the deepest it had been in awhile. Picking ninth, I figured I wouldn't get any of the backs I really wanted, but would probably take one just to have some security at the position. Then, when Calvin Johnson slipped to my spot, everything changed.
2. Did it work?
Yes and no. With Calvin Johnson and Dez Bryant as my first two picks, I'm in great shape at WR, especially in a PPR league. But many of the running backs I wanted got gobbled up before I could take them. It's natural to be thin at RB if you don't draft them earlier, but I'm thinner than I want to be.
3. Biggest surprise?
I was surprised Aaron Rodgers fell all the way to round three. I realize the QB spot is deep in 2013, but that's a steal.
4. In the draft, I regret:
I regret two things. One, was picking Jordy Nelson, not because of Jordy, because I think he's one of the safer receivers out there and would give me a great triple threat at WR, but because he got hurt after I picked him. I could have gotten another RB instead, even though I didn't like some of the backs that were out there at the time. Between Gore, Richardson/Pead, and Ivory, I should be okay since we only have to start two backs, but I do regret not being deeper.
5. Your favorite early round value pick?
Since my first four picks are pretty prominent fantasy players, I'm going to cheat a little by going with Ivory in round five and Richardson in round six. The Jets have an awful passing game, making Ivory a focal point by necessity. I took Richardson earlier than his ADP would indicate he should be taken, but his ADP is going to rise. He looked like the best back on the St. Louis roster against Cleveland Thursday night, and it wasn't even close. I was also happy to get Matthew Stafford in round seven.
6. Your favorite late round value pick?
With the new Browns coaching staff having more of a clue than the last several regimes, Greg Little may end up being a decent spot starter at times this year. And all the buzz in New England about Kenbrell Thompkins has been very positive. I liked what I saw from Thompkins on Friday night in Philadelphia. They'll be useful.

1) What was your draft strategy?
My draft strategy was to take the best player available. I wanted to grab running backs early, but if there was another player I liked better then I was going to take them.
2) Did it work?
Yes. Best example is in round two. I originally wanted to take two running backs, but I couldn't pass on getting A.J. Green.

How quickly the running back depth evaporated. I thought with three wide receivers that people would wait longer on running backs, but they were gone in a hurry.

Not paying attention to the bye weeks of my running backs. Since my draft strategy is to grab the best available, little things like bye weeks slip my mind.

Actually I'm not sure if any of my early picks are value picks. Most of the guys I selected were taken where they normally fall.

Cordarrelle Patterson in round 14. I really like what he brings to the table and getting him that late was nice.

1. What was your draft strategy?
I wanted to lock up a running back early and go after WR's late. I had nine RB's I was prepared to take with my first pick at 11 and really wanted to go that route.
2. Did it work?
Not at all. The nine guys I wanted were off the board and with the 3 WR setting, I ended up going WR-TE with my first two picks.
3. Biggest surprise?
I was surprised by just how many RB's were off the board by my third pick. I knew they'd go fast, but I thought a guy like Lamar Miller might be available in the late third. Not at all.

Taking Brandon Marshall over Marshawn Lynch and Alfred Morris. I was thinking one of those guys would get back to me, and I wanted Marshall. I should've gone the other way.

I liked LeVeon Bell in the third round. I think he'll be a bellcow in Pittsburgh.
6. Your favorite late round value pick?
I thought DeAngelo Williams and Andrew Luck in the 7th/8th rounds were pretty good value. With Stewart a question mark, I like Williams for borderline RB2/RB3 numbers.

1. What was your draft strategy?
My main goal was to land two QB1s and I accomplished that by drafting both Drew Brees and RG3.
2. Did it work?
To an extent, yes. Drafting two good QBs did force me to draft two low-end TE2s, but besides Jimmy Graham, there aren't many guys I'd be willing to draft in the first six or seven rounds.
3. Biggest surprise?
Pierre Thomas in Round 6 feels like a big reach. Don't trust Sean Payton to use anybody but Sproles often enough for PT or Mark Ingram to be much of a factor.
4. In the draft, I regret:
I let my timer expire and ended up with Jonathan Stewart. I needed a RB so at the time I didn't change the pick. I'm very thin at RB and I really need him to produce and obviously, relying on Stewart for much of anything is a mistake.
5. Your favorite early round value pick?
Maurice Jones-Drew at 3.04 is a great value. I'm not sure why the fantasy community is so low on him given his age and track record.
6. Your favorite late round value pick?
In a best ball format, I like Mike Vick in Round 13. He could come out of left field. He looked good in the few snaps he got earlier in the preseason.
