When it comes to DFS lineups, looking at matchups and opportunities will be key in lineup construction. Everyone knows that Calvin Johnson is an elite receiver, but that doesn’t necessarily make him a slam dunk starter every week in DFS. Johnson is typically one of the most expensive WRs in daily, but a WR with a cheaper price tag might be in a similar spot for production with a better match-up.

If Johnson is going to be facing an elite corner, like Darrelle Revis, I’m not spending up for him, and neither should you. Each week, I’m going to provide my observations on specific defensive players and how they affect the DFS landscape. Let's get to Week 1.

Defensive Players that will Affect the Passing Game

In looking at Steve Smith’s game-logs over the last several years, you’ll notice he’s put up pretty gaudy numbers on the first game of the year. Since 2011, he’s averaged a 7/113/1 receiving line. With the Ravens lacking for receiving options, he’ll be once again ticketed heavy volume, but that doesn’t necessarily make him a slam dunk play. He’ll likely being seeing plenty of CB Chris Harris in coverage. Harris allowed a 47.8 QB rating on balls thrown his way and a 51.7 completion percentage. If it’s not Harris, he could see Aqib Talib --who's not too shabby himself-- in coverage. The salary is good, but there’s risk for sure.
