Week 2 Essential NFL Practice News & Notes for Friday
Colts QB Andrew Luck (right shoulder) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week. Luck was removed from the IR on Friday so he’s in no danger of missing Week 2.
Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 2. Dak Prescott will continue to start.
Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (ankle) took full practice reps again Thursday. It looks like Wilson is on track to play in Week 2 against the Rams. He may be a bit limited in the running game but he says he’s “ready to roll.”
Eagles RB Kenjon Barner (not injury related) returned to take full practice reps Friday after missing practice Thursday.
Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee, doubtful) took limited practice reps all week and is doubtful for Week 2. Charles won’t play again this week, though he is practicing, so he’s working his way back. Spencer Ware will get the nod again after racking up 199 yards and a touchdown on 18 touches against the Chargers. He'll face a tougher test against a good Houston defense, especially with the Chiefs missing two starting offensive linemen.
Ravens RB Kenneth Dixon (knee, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 2.
Dolphins RB Arian Foster (hamstring, questionable) took full practice reps again Friday and is questionable for Week 2. Foster’s absence earlier in the week was a bit worrisome given his history of soft-tissue injuries, but it looks like it was just a maintenance day. This should serve as a reminder that Jay Ajayi has value as an attrition play given Foster’s long history of injury, though it should be noted that he doesn’t have the backup job locked up. Foster practiced fully for two days, so we expect him to play. The Dolphins play early on Sunday.
Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (quadricep) took full practice reps again Friday. Freeman has found himself in a committee with Tevin Coleman. He was removed from the injury report so he’s going to play against the Raiders.
Rams RB Todd Gurley (rest, questionable) took full practice reps again Friday and is questionable for Week 2. Other outlets are calling it a heel injury, but the official IR refers to it simply as “rest.” We’re fully expecting Gurley to play in a bad matchup against the Seahawks.
Jaguars RB Chris Ivory (not injury related - illness, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 2. Ivory has been ruled out. T.J. Yeldon should carry the load in what should be a high-scoring game against the Chargers. He posted 69 total yards and a touchdown on 25 touches against the Packers. The efficiency wasn’t great, but the workload was there.
Redskins RB Matt Jones (shoulder) took full practice reps all week. Jones was removed from the injury report so he’s good to go.
Raiders RB Taiwan Jones (concussion, questionable) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week and is questionable for Week 2.
Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon (foot, fibula) took full practice reps again Friday.
Steelers RB Roosevelt Nix (back, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 2.
Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (ankle) took full practice reps all week and was removed from the injury report. Peterson will be fine to face Green Bay.
Texans RB Jay Prosch (ankle) took full practice reps all week.
Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise (wrist, questionable) took full practice reps again Thursday.
and is questionable for Week 2.
Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle, questionable) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week and is questionable for Week 2. The full participation indicates that Stewart is good to go for a nice matchup against San Francisco. If the Panthers jump out to a lead, it could be a high-carry day for Stewart.
Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor (knee, questionable) took limited practice reps all week and is questionable for Week 2.
Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (toe) took full practice reps again Friday and was removed from the injury report. He’ll get the bulk of the touches for the Chiefs. It’s a tougher matchup than last week, and the Chiefs will be without two starting guards.
Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams (not injury related) was removed from the injury report Friday. Williams is good to go.
Cardinals WR Jaron Brown (ankle) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week.
Rams WR Pharoh Cooper (shoulder, doubtful) returned to take limited reps Friday after missing practice earlier in the week and is doubtful for Week 2.
Packers WR Trevor Davis (shoulder, questionable) took full practice reps again Friday and is questionable for Week 2.
Redskins WR Josh Doctson (achilles, questionable) took full practice reps all week and is questionable for Week 2.
Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald (knee) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week. Fitzgerald is good to go for a nice matchup against the Bucs.
Broncos WR Bennie Fowler (elbow, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 2.
Colts WR T.Y. Hilton (knee) returned to take full practice reps Friday after missing practice Thursday. The Colts removed Hilton from the injury report. He’ll play in a bad matchup against the Broncos.
Patriots WR Chris Hogan (shoulder, questionable) took full practice reps all week and is questionable for Week 2. Hogan was “full” all week so we expect him to play.
Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) took full practice reps all week.
Vikings WR Charles Johnson (quadricep) took full practice reps all week.
Falcons WR Julio Jones (ankle) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week. He was removed from the injury report so he’s good to go.
Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin (not injury related) was removed from the injury report Friday. Maclin will be fine for a tough matchup with the Texans.
Cardinals WR J.J. Nelson (shoulder, questionable) took limited practice reps again Friday and is questionable for Week 2.
Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (hamstring, questionable) took limited practice reps all week and is questionable for Week 2. Parker isn’t worth a start even if he plays, but he’s a player worth monitoring. His return would put a dent in Kenny Stills’ upside.
Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (calf, questionable) took full practice reps again Friday and is questionable for Week 2. The return to full practice is a good sign for Perriman, who should play in Week 2.
Browns WR Terrelle Pryor (shoulder) took full practice reps all week. He was removed from the IR, so he’ll play against Baltimore.
Falcons WR Mohamed Sanu (ankle) took full practice reps on Friday after being limited earlier in the week. Sanu was removed from the injury report so he’s ready for the Raiders in Week 2.
Rams WR Nelson Spruce (knee, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 2.
Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas (hip, questionable) took limited practice reps all week and is questionable for Week 2. Thomas was seen “grabbing his hip” and “grimacing” on Wednesday per Broncos beat writer Cameron Wolfe, though Gary Kubiak expects Thomas to play on Sunday. On Thursday, Thomas admitted that he’s concerned about coming out of cuts and getting hit. It’s a great matchup with the Colts, but Thomas looks like a risky play this week. Complicating matters, the Broncos play late on Sunday, though we currently expect him to play.
Eagles WR Bryce Treggs (knee) took full practice reps again Friday.
Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (shoulder, questionable) was limited Friday after taking full reps earlier in the week and is questionable for Week 2. He could have been given some Friday reps off for rest, or he could have had a setback with the shoulder. If he’s out, look for Eli Rogers to pick up the slack again. The Steelers play early on Sunday.
Bengals WR James Wright (knee) returned to take full practice reps Friday after missing practice Thursday.
Titans WR Kendall Wright (hamstring, out) missed practice again Friday and is out for Week 2.
Eagles TE Trey Burton (calf) took full practice reps again Friday. Burton could assume most of Zach Ertz’s targets if the team elects to keep Brent Celek in as a blocker.
Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron (thigh, questionable) took full practice reps all week and is questionable for Week 2.
Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 2. Eifert won’t play this week. ESPN’s Bob Holtzman reports that Eifert is “only running at half speed” and that it will likely “be a few weeks” before he’s back.
Vikings TE Rhett Ellison (knee) took full practice reps all week.
Eagles TE Zach Ertz (rib) missed practice again Friday. Ertz is very unlikely to play this week. Brent Celek is a Sneaky Start, but Trey Burton could gobble up some of Ertz’s routes.
Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham (knee) took full practice reps again Thursday. Graham continues to ramp up his practice activity.
Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring, questionable) took limited practice reps all week and is questionable for Week 2. Gronk was limited all last week and sat out. The beat writers seem pessimistic about his status since he’s not doing much of anything at practice. The Patriots play early on Sunday, so we shouldn’t be playing any guessing games on Sunday.
Broncos TE Jeff Heuerman (ankle) took full practice reps again Friday.
Saints TE Josh Hill (ankle, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 2. Coby Fleener should be a full-time player in Week 2 and has a great matchup against the Giants, who gave up a ton of catches to Jason Witten in Week 1.
Vikings TE MyCole Pruitt (knee, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 2.
Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph (knee) took full practice reps all week. Rudolph tends to play well against the Packers but is always a dicey start.
Cowboys TE Geoff Swaim (ankle, questionable) took full practice reps again Friday and is questionable for Week 2.
Jaguars TE Julius Thomas (ankle) took full practice reps all week. Thomas was removed from the injury report so he’s ready to face the Chargers.
Seahawks TE Nick Vannett (ankle, out) missed practice again Thursday and is out for Week 2.
Lions TE Cole Wick (shoulder, questionable) returned to take limited reps Friday after missing practice Thursday and is questionable for Week 2.
