WR vs. CB Matchups to Exploit & Avoid in DFS: Week 6
When it comes to selecting receivers in DFS, it’s important to understand who will cover them, as sometimes defense versus position stats alone don't tell the whole story. In addition, there can many times be defensive injuries that will have a significant, and perhaps hidden, effect on a receiver's matchup. Below we'll take a deeper look at the matchups that should help in your WR decisions for Week 6.
Note: Any unlisted matchups -- especially those of prominent WRs -- should generally be considered a push.
Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers
Exploit: The Chargers' secondary has been dealt a blow with the loss of Jason Verrett, and it appears that Steve Williams be covering Demaryius Thomas in Week 6. Williams has been the primary target of opposing QBs 31 percent of the time and is allowing 0.34 points per route. On seven targets, Williams is giving up nearly nine yards per target. Thomas is putting up 0.48 points per route and I look for Thomas to line up on Williams' side of the field for most of the night in what appears to be a favorable matchup.
Avoid: Emmanuel Sanders will draw Casey Hayward. The Broncos do a good job of moving of him around, so there's the possibility the Broncos try to scheme Sanders away from Hayward. Hayward's allowing fewer than 0.25 points per route, so he's doing a good job of limiting fantasy points coming his way, especially since QBs are only throwing his way 14 percent of the time.
Avoid: Travis Benjamin lines up on Aqib Talib's side of the field the majority of the time, and Talib has been one of the better corners this season. On 22 targets, he's allowing fewer than five yards per target and just 0.14 fantasy points per route. I'm also concerned that the Denver pass rush won't allow Philip Rivers too much time to get the ball downfield.
San Francisco 49'ers at Buffalo Bills
Avoid: Nickell Robey-Coleman mans the slot for Buffalo and he'll draw Jeremy Kerley this week, as Kerley runs 90 percent of his routes from the slot. Not only is Kerley dealing with a solid slot corner, but a new QB as well. It's unknown how Colin Kaepernick will perform in his first game action of the year. In 165 coverage routes, Robey-Coleman has allowed just 0.12 points per route. The 49ers' passing situation is one I'm avoiding this week.
Avoid: When he's not in the slot, Robert Woods lines up on Rashard Robinson's side of the field. Woods has moved around the field, but Buffalo looks to be establishing Walter Powell in the slot more. Robinson has been an underrated corner. He's been targeted eight times, allowing fewer than four yards per target and 0.10 fantasy points per route on 92 coverage routes.
