The Training Room: Week 10 Injury Updates
Week 9 saw a number of big names return to the field after extended absences due to injuries, but so far we have only a few names to cover when it comes to new injuries. Week 10 has the Jets, Cowboys, Chiefs, and Falcons all on byes, so fantasy managers should plan in advance to be without any of those players on your roster.
Christian McCaffrey, RB Panthers
Injury: Strained Shoulder
Timetable For Recovery: Ruled OUT for Week 10.
Potential Replacemens: Mike Davis
Initial Thoughts: It's unfortunate that CMC didn't last more than just 1 week before getting hurt with a new shoulder injury that will take some time to get him feeling better. Mike Davis has been a serviceable backup since CMC has been sidelined so fantasy owners will get to utilize him for at least one more week while McCaffrey recovers. It's tough to say how long CMC will miss, but he'll need to practice early on in the week in my opinion in order for fantasy owners to feel comfortable that he's trending in the right direction.
David Montgomery, RB Bears
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Recovery: Day To Day. Ruled OUT for MNF.
Potential Replacements: Cordarelle Patterson, Ryan Nall
Initial Thoughts: The extra day didn't seem to matter much for Montgomery as he will not be cleared in time to play against the Vikings. Montgomery should be fine moving forward as the Bears have a bye Week 11.
Matthew Stafford, QB Lions
Injury: Strained Neck
Timetable For Recovery: Expected to play Week 10.
Potential Replacements: Chase Daniel
Initial Thoughts: Stafford took a leg to the head as he was being sacked which is what caused the head trauma. Thankfully, it appears that he did not sustain a concussion and it was more of just a strained neck that had him sidelined earlier in the week. Stafford has not produced like fantasy owners had hoped, but it helps the Lions position players maintain some level of potential productivity with Stafford available against the Washington football team.
David Johnson, RB Texans
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Recovery: Ruled OUT for Week 10. Placed on IR.
Potential Replacements: Duke Johnson
Initial Thoughts: Johnson suffered the concussion in the first quarter and did not return. Being placed on IR is somewhat of a surprise for Johnson but he will not miss at least 3 games as he tries to get healthy.
Preston Williams, WR Dolphins
Injury: Sprained Foot
Timetable For Recovery: At least 3 weeks. Placed on injured reserve.
Potential Replacements: Jakeem Grant, Mack Hollins
Initial Thoughts: Williams hurt his foot in the second quarter and had to be carted off the field. The sprain is significant enough for the Dolphins to make the move to move him to IR for the next few weeks in hopes that he is able to heal and progress through rehab. Foot issues do take longer than we expect due to the stress the foot endures and the potential for re-aggravation.
Justin Jackson, RB Chargers
Injury: Sprained Knee
Timetable For Recovery: Ruled OUT for Week 10. Placed on IR.
Potential Replacements: Joshua Kelley, Kalen Ballage
Initial Thoughts: Jackson missed some time earlier in the year due to a thigh injury and now is going to be sidelined with a knee issue that will hold him out of Week 10 and longer. His health continues to be the biggest concern for his availability on the field.
Jack Doyle, TE Colts
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Recovery: Week to Week. Ruled OUT for Week 10.
Potential Replacements: Trey Burton, Mo Alie-Cox
Initial Thoughts: Doyle took a shot to the head by a Ravens defender as he was attempting to make a catch. He was helped off the field and later ruled out with a concussion. Doyle has had a history of head trauma, with his last concussion being at the hands of Vontaze Burfict last year, so the Colts may err on the side of caution in bringing him back slowly and when he's back to 100%.
Kyle Allen, QB Washington Football Team
Injury: Ankle Fracture/Dislocation
Timetable For Recovery: Out for Season.
Potential Replacements: Alex Smith
Initial Thoughts: This one looked uglier than the actual diagnosis ended up with thankfully. Allen will miss the rest of the season but should make a full recovery barring any setbacks with his recovery.
Laviska Shenault, WR Jaguars
Injury: Strained Hamstring
Timetable For Recovery: Week to Week. Ruled OUT for Week 10.
Potential Replacements: Keelan Cole, Chris Conley
Initial Thoughts: Shenault suffered the injury early in the game and did not return. He was able to practice in limited fashion but it appears that he's not healthy enough just yet to return to the field. He's got a better chance in Week 11 if he doesn't sustain any setbacks in his recovery.
On The Mend
Nick Chubb, RB Browns
Injury: Sprained Knee. Activated off IR.
Initial Thoughts: Chubb has been activated off IR and has practiced all week with the team. His return puts a damper on Kareem Hunt moving forward but for those who have Chubb, he can safely be inserted back into fantasy lineups.
Joe Mixon, RB Bengals
Injury: Sprained Foot. Ruled OUT for Week 10.
Initial Thoughts: Mixon didn't practice at all this week and will miss another week due to the foot issues that he's dealing with. Coach Taylor states that he expects Mixon to play in Week 11, but until we see Mixon back on the practice field, I would take any news on MIxon's foot with a grain of salt.
Kenny Golladay, WR Lions
Injury: Strained Hip. Ruled OUT for Week 11.
Initial Thoughts: Golladay continues to struggle recovering from a hip issue that he sustained in Week 8. He has yet to resume practicing which isn't a great sign so until we see him do so, consider other fantasy plans for the time being.
Tevin Coleman, RB 49ers
Injury: Sprained Knee. Ruled OUT for Week 11.
Initial Thoughts: Coleman doesn't look like he's close to returning so he'll sit another week in hopes rest will be the best medicine for him. It'll be a wait and see approach with Coleman until further notice as the 49ers continue to struggle with injuries to the offensive side of the ball.
Kenyan Drake, RB Cardinals
Injury: Sprained Ankle. Game Time Decision for Week 10.
Initial Thoughts: Drake has been practicing in limited fashion this week and will be a game time call to determine his potential ability to play against the Bills. He'll test out his ankle before the game and if he does play, it sounds like it may be in a reduced role to limit any potential re-aggravation. Chase Edmonds will continue to see an expanded role even if Drake were to play so he would still be a viable option.
Mark Ingram, RB Ravens
Injury: High Ankle Sprain. Questionable for Week 10.
Initial Thoughts: Ingram practice in full for the first time since injuring his ankle whichi is an encouraging sign that he'll be available for Sunday night against the Patriots. The Ravens may choose to ease him back into his volume to not risk aggravation considering they have depth at the running back position. It's a good sign for the Ravens to have him back against an important game this Sunday night.
Chris Carson, RB Seahawks
Injury: Sprained Midfoot. Ruled OUT for Week 10.
Initial Thoughts: Until we see Carson back on the field in limited fashion then we can keep assuming that he's not ready to come back just yet. The Seahawks will continue to rely on a committee in the backfield that doesn't seem like a great option for fantasy purposes.
Devonta Freeman, RB Giants
Injury: Sprained Ankle. Placed on IR.
Initial Thoughts: Freeman aggravated his ankle when trying to ramp up his activity this week so the Giants decided to put him on IR to help him get 100% healthy. Even though the Giants are still technically in the NFC East race, there was no risk to rush Freeman back when they have Gallman and Dion Lewis to take over the backfield.
