2021 Northern Trust: Round 3 Matchups

Heading into Friday's second-round action at Liberty National Golf Club on the shores of New York Harbor, it appeared as if two of the world's best, Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas, might run away with the tournament. However, Thomas struggled mightily early in his round, shooting 3-over par through the first 13 holes before rescuing his round with three birdies and an eagle on the last five to salvage a 69. While Rahm didn't repeat his spectacular 63 from Thursday, he remained bogey-free with four birdies and had another great day ball-striking, gaining over three strokes on the field. So while both stalled at times compared to their first rounds, an entire host of players shot up the leaderboard to provide some company as the course yielded its lowest score ever in 14 rounds with players shooting an average of almost two shots under par.
