Rules Updates, But Still No Launch Date for North Carolina Sports Betting
As 2024 approaches quickly, the North Carolina Lottery Commission's Sports Betting Advisory Committee has been making decisions on rules and regulations as it prepares for a launch. There is still no official word on a launch date, but more rules were put in place and approved for North Carolina sports betting. Here are the details.
Early November Meeting Sees Rules Approved
There was a unanimous vote earlier this week to approve a second wave of rules for North Carolina sports betting. Another step in the right direction as the North Carolina Sports Betting Advisory Committee inches towards launching online betting next year.
No Naming Rights, No "Free" Ad Language
The committee set rules in place revolving around naming rights at sports facilities. Sportsbooks are not allowed to purchase naming rights at sports facilities that they are partnered with. For example, if DraftKings were to partner with the Carolina Panthers, they couldn't purchase naming rights for a seating section or lounge in the stadium.
Also in the second wave of rules, the committee added regulations on language in advertising. Operators cannot use the words "free" or "risk-free" when promoting their sportsbooks. This type of language is common in a sportsbook's promotional offers. The top brands will have to use different terminology to avoid using the word "free" in North Carolina.
Responsible Gaming Plans
Another important rule set up by the committee is ensuring each operator has a responsible gambling plan in place. It must be submitted to the committee for approval as states continue to work hard to protect sports bettors from the dangers of online betting.
Still No North Carolina Sports Betting Launch Date
There is one thing the committee still hasn't made its final decision on when the state will launch online sports betting. The sports betting bill signed by the governor in June 2023 requires the state to launch online betting as early as January 8, 2024. The final date on which North Carolina has to launch betting online is on June 8, 2024.
