This is one of the most surprising World Series matchups ever. This is just the third all Wild Card team World Series matchup. The Diamondbacks and Rangers have the fewest combined wins of any World Series participants in baseball history. Both teams lost over 100 games two years ago. It was unlikely that both teams got here, but that's what makes it fun.
The Rangers invested a TON of money into their roster this offseason in an effort to try and get back to the Postseason. Their Manager Bruce Bochy won three World Series titles with the Giants. You have to think that gives Texas an advantage here.
The Diamondbacks won't be intimidated, though. Arizona shocked the world to get here and one could argue this is their easiest opponent since the Wild Card round. They beat up on the 100-win Dodgers. They won two elimination games in Philadelphia where the Phillies have been difficult to beat.
The Rangers are sending Nathan Eovaldi to the mound in Game 1. Eovaldi has been money so far in the Postseason. He has a 2.42 ERA and 2.68 FIP over four postseason starts. He did an admirable job keeping the Astros offense at bay in the ALCS. He gave up 5 earned runs over 12.1 innings in two road starts, both Rangers wins.
Zac Gallen gets the Game 1 start for Arizona. Gallen was excellent most of the season, but sputtered down the stretch amassing a 4.93 ERA over his final seven starts of the regular season. Gallen's first two postseason starts against the Brewers and Dodgers were productive, but he struggled in the NLCS against the Phillies. Gallen allowed nine earned runs in two starts and gave up five home runs. Gallen only gave up 22 home runs over 210 innings in the regular season, so Diamondbacks backers have to hope his struggles were just because the Phillies have guys who can mash.
