The 49ers are expected to place RB Jerick McKinnon on injured reserve with a knee injury, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport notes it is unclear whether this will end McKinnon's season or if he will return at some point during the season. McKinnon had suffered a setback during his recovery after having just returned to practice on Tuesday. Injuries have gotten the better of McKinnon since signing a four-year, $30 million deal with the 49ers in 2018 after he tore his ACL before the start of last season. McKinnon had started training camp on the active/PUP list but was taken off the list, therefore he cannot be placed on reserve/PUP. Even if he comes back, the 49ers will continue to roll with Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida in the backfield.
