In what has become an almost weekly ritual, the 49ers pledged to ease up on Frank Gore’s workload.
Offensive coordinator Mike Johnson said it again Thursday, vowing that “there will be a plan going forward to make sure we use other people (so) that he’s not taking as many of those snaps.”
Um … sure.
Coach Mike Singletary said the same thing as far back as draft weekend, after the team selected running back Anthony Dixon. “You have a hard time trying to explain to Frank how some other guy needs to play. He just doesn’t get it,’’ Singletary said in April. “I think as time goes on he’ll be a little more willing to do that.”
Um … right.
Six games into this season, Gore has 116 carries. Dixon has three carries and Brian Westbrook has two.
We've been hearing a lot of that lately - like with Caddy Williams and Chris Johnson. Johnson gave up 10 carries last week to Javon Ringer, the first significant decrease we've seen in a while. So while no one seems to believe this with Gore, this is the time of year when coaches get really concerned with their big guns wearing down.
