Alex Smith "mostly content" with short throws

Even in practice, while Chiefs QB Alex Smith has taken shots down the field with deep passes, he’s been mostly content to throw shorter routes in front of the coverage.

But Dwayne Bowe, who during the spring predicted he would lead the NFL this season in catches and receiving touchdowns, said he isn’t worried.

“We’re progressing,’’ he said. “Coach says we’ve got to crawl before you walk. As long as you’re moving the chains, the offense will be productive. It’s preseason. We’re working on the mechanics of getting the ball thrown deep. It’s all a process. We’ve got one game down, three more to go and then the real season starts. And that’s when you’ll see Bombs Over Baghdad.’’

Fantasy Impact:

Smith is still going to throw a lot of passes in Andy Reid's offense, so he should be a decent QB2 based on volume alone. Eventually, he'll have to throw the ball deep. He was solid in that part of the game while in San Francisco, but was aided by the 49ers' strong running game.
